Ah, you beat me to it - I think the original was the best though
I'd agree on Jeff Buckley 'Hallelujah' and the Gary Jules version of 'Mad World' although with the latter I reckon Tears For Fears were being slightly ironic with the words being sung to such an up tempo tune.
I would add Bon Jovi's version of 'It's My Life' on the This Left Feels Right album over their own original
I love some of the songs named here - Johnny Cash, Hurt; St Etienne, Only Love Can Break Your Heart - but I love the originals as much as the cover, partly because they are so different.
Pretty much any cover of a Cohen or Dylan song sounds better to me than the original!
Some great covers of frankly diabolical originals!
Vienna - Vic Reeves & Bob Mortimer, found on a covers album put out by the NME in the early 90s. Comedy genius.
David Watts - The Jam
It must be Love - Madness
Pretty much anything that Johnny Cash covered on the American series of albums.
Occasionally someone posts Jeff Buckley's cover of Led Zeppelin's "Night Flight" on youtube. It's the guitar and vocals only version from the Grace sessions. Quite astonishing.
Until The End Of The World by Patti Smith originally by U2,sung as if from the bottom of a bottle
saw Patti play a small acoustic gig in Scarborough a few years back, absolutely fantastic night
I love Disturbed's version of Sound of Silence. I wouldn't say it's better than the original but it's very different and I reckon it counts as a great cover version.

Def Leppard did a great cover of "Please Release Me" credited to Stumpus Maximus and the Good Ole Boys as a "Hysteria" era B side. I used to turn up the volume and weep tears of laughter when I listened to it.

Oh no, that was NOT a great cover IMO - Kate Bush's version is way better, that, for me, is really some way below the original.
Heard a recent cover of the Daft Punk/Pharrell Williams Get Lucky - done by Halestorm - not bad !
Very different to the above (Halestorm are a Metal band) is Richard Thompson doing Britney's Oops I did it again.
A personal fave - Volbeat's cover of I only Wanna be With You (Dusty Springfield / The Tourists), also Faith No More - Easy, a GREAT cover.

As well as prolific writing, he won a law suit against LedZep regarding Whole Lotta Love.

It also took me a remarkably long time to discover a bunch of Nirvana songs are covers - Molly's lips & Love Buzz are both great.
Also:
Flaming Lips - Can't get you out of my head
Slayer - Ina gadda de vida

This is a poor recording but a great show by Pink.
Blondie-Hanging On The Telephone
Throwing Muses-Cry Baby Cry
I agree. Willy DeVille, though, brought a special menace to the tune.
