About a week to go until the ballot results :P
Anyone else thinking of those closed roads, Surrey sun and cheering crowds?

I seem to remember putting my name down for this. Do they email you with the results of the ballot?0

Keeping my fingers crossed, but as a natural cynic not optimistic.0

Last year you could check earlier by logging in.
If it's asking for payment you were in and if it said 'cancelled' in red letters, you were binned
I am going to wait for the magazine this year as seeing a big red 'cancelled' was depressing0 -
Iwas absolutely gutted when I didn't make the cut last year, so have given up hoping this year. Also, I've signed up for the Human Race (pretty much the same route) which didn't have a ballot, so I know I'll be doing something!0
-
My name went in the hat too... I wonder what the odds actually amount to?
If I'm Cancelled, I shall be mortified.0 -
I missed out last year but got a place through Wiggle. If they are a main sponsor this year they may be doing the same thing again - worth keeping an eye on their twitter feed (think the places came up in June/July last year)0
-
Last year I also missed out in the ballot but got a charity place. This year I am fortunate that my charity has already allocated me a special entry if I fail again with the ballot, however they too are only allocated a number of places and they are also over-subscribed with applications for these places.0
-
I've entered and it would be nice to get in, but if I don't it's no big deal.0
-
I got in last year and I'm going to laugh at you all when I get in again this year.0
-
Not too bothered if I don't get in, I will just go out and ride around the Yorkshire dales, more demanding than surrey, and better to look at too0

Anyone can do that on there own any day of the week. Not exactly a comparison or competitor to Ride London
Stay on the left if you do RYD100 2014
Hope you get into both though0 -

Yawwwwn, lighten up mate, there's probably a tablet for curing seriousness, you might want to take one0 -

Sorry xrecymech, thought it was pretty light hearted and friendly (OK, it started factual, but got light hearted and eventually friendly).
Your the one who chose to randomly abuse a whole county :shock:0 -
In the ballot again this year. Fingers crossed, I got in last year and would love to ride it again.0
-
Fingers crossed - both myself and better half are in the ballot - if we both get in, might have to tandem it for giggles. I didn't get in last year (and better half didn't apply), but I was sort of glad as it was only a couple of days after the end of London-Edinburgh-London and the legs were still a little sore from that. But this year, I'd be well up for it - I really enjoyed watching parts of it last year, I went up to Richmond Park and watched some of the slower riders really seeming to enjoy themselves - it was great.0
-
Same here except I went with a charity place last year after missing out on the ballot.
Feel wife stands a good chance of getting in on the ballot but that my chances are even less than last year :-(
I tried to log in to see if I could find out if I got a place but link I had from last year did not work.
Kind of want to wait for magazine anyway so was glad I did not find out.0 -
I've combined it this year with a little break with the family. We're booked at the Premier inn at Olympic park. We fly in on the Tuesday. Going to have a few days doing touristy stuff with the family, then (hopefully) do the event on the sunday, and fly home on the Monday evening.
Hope I make the ballot. If I don't, I'll have a look and see if any of the charity places take my fancy. Failing that I'll just sack the lot off and spectate / drink. MOOARR COWBELLLL!!!!!!!
I've done pretty well this year getting cycling trips masquerading as family breaks.
- Lanzarote in march (not told her I'm bringing the bike yet).
- We're off to stay with my Mum in July too, who just happens to live on the route the tour will be taking out of Leeds. Happy coincidence indeed
- Got a long weekend at centre parcs in June for which I will bring the MTB along (they encourage cycling you know) and it just so happens to be close to Whinlatter.
All I need to do now is convince her that we should have a romantic weekend in Paris 26-27th July and that's pretty much my calendar complete.0 -
Iv applied but not holding out much hope.
Just out of interest is the estimated time for completion taking into consideration when allocating spaces ?
Im guessing the completion time of around 5-6 hours will have the most applicants whilst people stating 7 hours+ will have the least.
On that basis im fully expecting my OH to get a place and me not0 -

...
Last year, on my entry form I estimated my completion time as 7 hrs 15, based on solo 100 mile rides took me that kind of time. I was in the last wave to start but was on a charity place so that may or may not have been a factor. I got round in 5 hrs 45 though, as there are plenty of fast moving groups constantly forming and breaking up, and I had done enough training to stay in them and do my share on the front. From reading forums, it seemed most others that got in said lower times, but that would be subjective.
I read that whilst the organisers wanted a good cross-section of ability, they also wanted a good event and didn't want too many folks on basket-equipped shopping bikes getting swept up by the broom wagon, so there may have been a bias to cyclists with a lot of sportive experience.0 -

I think your OH (assuming female) may stand a better chance of getting in because she is female rather than the time she put.
I would say time is an influencing factor (and they will have more accurate timings for people who did it last year) because they are wanting to increase numbers each year and they need the participants to flow as smoothly as possible, but not sure you could work out what time gives you a better shot of getting in.
Following on from what DaveP1 said about bias towards sportive riders last year, I think the bias will be towards slower riders this year, so the 7 hour entrants may find it harder to get in with than the 5-6 hour ones.
Do not think that a charity place affects where you start as you still have to fill in the same form as the one in the ballot when you get a charity place.
Its a very fast course (i.e. you will probably do it faster than you think).
Good luck in the draw. If you are unlucky I would recommend getting a charity place.0 -
I put my target time in as 4-5hrs as it does appear (as Carbonator says) to be a very fast course just due to it being so flat if nothing else. The big groups and closed roads will only help it to be faster.
I used my current century times as a basis. Over here, a century will typically involve around 2,500m+ climbing and on a good day I'm looking at about 5:30 riding solo or in a group of 3-4.0 -

4-5 hours? Are you planning on winning it?
The winning time was 4 hours 15 minutes last year wasn't it?
I did not think 4-5 hours was an option on the form anyway
I was in the 6.14am wave (with Borris ) last year so hoping to be in an even earlier one this year.
If we are in the same wave, can I draft you for a bit please0 -
It's a really fast course. I know quite a few who put in mid to low 4 hour times.English Cycles V3 | Cervelo P5 | Cervelo T4 | Trek Domane Koppenberg0

Cannot remember what I put but if I beat it by the same margin I beat last years estimated time then I will be V happy.
I do not feel I made the most of the closed roads or getting in with groups of riders as I could have, so feel there is room for improvement as long as I have another clean ride and the weather is as good.
Its worth doing just to get a fast century time :P0 -

Haha, to be clear, I think I'll be closer to 5 than 4. I'm sure it was an option though. In fact, I'm sure there was an option for sub4hrs (could be wrong about that though)
I'd say 4:30-5:00 is realistically achievable from what I've seen of the route, obviously that means no cake stops along the way, which is bad times. Flat roads with a good sized group, zipping along at a 20mph+ average is perfectly reasonable I'd say.
A quick google to make sure I'm not completely deluding myself refers me back to this very site, and shows me there were 454 riders between 4:03:24 - 4:29:59, then a further 1,552 between 4:30:00 - 4:59:59.

I'm confident I can slot into that 2nd bracket given the same conditions this year0 -

I would not describing this course as being “so flat if nothing else”, yes 60% is flat, but I recall from last year, there were at least five good hills to break you rhythm and seriously slow you down.
From my race plan last year to achieve a sub-5-hour time, on the flat sections you needed to be averaging at least 22 mph and for a sub 4.45 time this was 23 mph!
From my experience, if you take your average speed over a lumpy 10 mile club time trial, that will give you a more accurate average speed time over the RL 100 course.0 -
My last 100 mile TT was lumpier than this course...English Cycles V3 | Cervelo P5 | Cervelo T4 | Trek Domane Koppenberg0

It IS a very flat course over 100 miles though. It's no more than 1,500m elevation over the entire thing. And without wanting to get into a plssing contest about climbing, there are no significant hills in there.
I've already done a couple of hilly centuries (2,600m) with some real climbs in them within 30min of my target time here.
Obviously, you've done the course before, and I haven't. So I will of course take what you said under advisement. I still believe in my ability to finish within my 5hr target time though.
I'd better fkn well get in now after giving it the arrogant "I'm faster than yaw" bit I'll start preparing my excuses now and check back here in Aug0
