Ah yes brakes, another can of worms!!
I've got some Hope pro2 hubs I bought for my mtb a couple of years ago with minimal use. Could they be rebuilt into a road wheelset? I assume the genesis takes 135mm hubs?0 -

Yes... 135left the forum March 20230 -
Would it be worth rebuilding them Ugo? Was just going to sell the wheels otherwise0

Rebuild... you won't get enough to buy a new set by selling them... I thinkleft the forum March 20230 -
I haven't seen it mentioned but, you will be wanting mudguards won't you?My blog: http://www.roubaixcycling.cc (kit reviews and other musings)

I have never used mudguards even on the MTb so not really thought about it to be honest. Does it make a difference to wheel choice??0

Good man!
No, it doesn't, but it does to which frame is suitableleft the forum March 20230 -

No, it makes a difference to frame choice. You've cited a few which you liked, Croix, Boardman etc which will take mudguards. Fugio and Planet X won't.
There is a difference in clearances with some frames and tyre size. But if you're planning on a winter bike then I'm guessing you aren't going for over 32c tyres. So you should be fine with most frames.
Ugo doesn't do mudguards as I recall. I do. For me it makes it far far more likely that I will go out in the wet and mud. And, like you, I don't use them on the MTB.My blog: http://www.roubaixcycling.cc (kit reviews and other musings)

Ok thanks. I'm pretty much decided on the Genesis just need to pick between equilibrium and croix. Shop near me stocks both so was going to have a look there tomorrow and also ask about them rebuilding the hopes onto some archetypes.0

Both superb. For winter you cannot beat the croixMy blog: http://www.roubaixcycling.cc (kit reviews and other musings)

I'm going through pretty much the same decision process at the moment - Equilibrium Disc or Croix de Fer - for a winter trainer/commute bike. I'm leaning towards the Croix due to the versatility of the frame (rack mounts, additional tyre clearance etc.) and the new positioning of the rear brake mount inside the triangle (easier mounting of stuff on the back end). However I am tempted by the Croix 931 - I'm just not sure I can justify the massive price hike! I've also been finding it difficult to get exact weights from anyone on the regular Croix v the 931 - Genesis came back to me and said they couldn't help!! I don't have a local dealer that keeps Genesis in stock so comparing them in person is not realistic unfortunately.
Once I've finally made a decision I'll be sticking an Ultegra 6700 groupset on it (with the new CX77 disc brakes) and have Archetype rims built onto XT hubs coming (the lighter centrelock ones rather than the brick heavy 6 bolters).
Oh, and Epic are the cheapest I've found so far.0 -
I should add that I was also considering a cheaper CX option before landing on the Genesis, with the Boardman CX leading the way. In the end I just felt that it was worth spending some additional ££ now to build up a quality winter bike that would last and steel definitely seemed the right way forward.0

Because weight shouldn't be a consideration.I'm sorry you don't believe in miracles0 -
The 931 does look nice. Had a look at both yesterday, 931 croix didn't seem a lot lighter to be honest, seemed similar to the Equilibrium so would guess maybe a kg less if that even. I'm sure someone on here will know more. Personally don't think it's worth 3 times the 725 standard croix. But I'd only be using it for winter/commute so weight isn't a major issue, got the carbon race bike for that. I was also tempted by the Fugio. Looks stunning up close. But think I will go with croix.
I had the same dilemma with the boardman. £600 seems a bargain but the Genesis should last a lifetime.0 -

I largely agree - this is never going to be a super light build, however it would be interesting to know and surprising that it's so hard to find out!0 -

I love the look of the 931 but I just can't justify the additional ££, shame! Agree that the Fugio looks amazing, I just need the rack/guard mounts so have had to put that idea to bed.
The Croix seems the logical choice however I keep being drawn back to the Equilibrium Disc..... argh.0 -

I know what you mean. All logic tells me to get the Croix and I now have everything else ready to go (lbs building up the wheels for me). But keep thinking maybe I should go for the Equilibrium Disc (although i very nearly walked out of the shop with a Fugio yesterday!). I need to stop faffing and just buy it!!0 -
The Croix 931 would be worth it if they upgraded the fork too... as it is now it does not offer a real improvement over the 725 version. Steel is steel, whatever number you want to call it.
Re the Fugio... can't help with the guards, I don't use them, they're a waste of space, but for the rack I use a Blackburn Expedition 1 disc, that fits through the QR... I have had one for 4 years and it works very well. At the top, you can buy a seatpost collar or a seat tube collar with mounts for guards. Get a decent one, like the Salsa seatpost one and you'll be just fineleft the forum March 20230 -
I hadn't seen the Blackburn rack so thanks for that - the spacers etc. make it a great option. I'd been considering the Tubus Disco http://www.tubus.com/product.php?xn=10 but I wasn't sure it would fit the Genesis due to the style of the rear dropouts.
Hmmm, do I add the Fugio back into the mix and clip-on some mudguards for the commute?0 -

For commute is a bit OTT... you get a race carbon fork, light stiff... expensive and more delicate than the indestructible CdF steel forksleft the forum March 20230 -

Both were great. Equilibrium was a bit lighter but not hugely, I doubt I would really notice the difference on a ride between the 2. Equilibrium looked more race bike geometry wise. Croix probably better for winter / commute - am leaning towards the croix for the price. £334 at lbs for frame and forks at moment.0 -

So, I've decided to go for the Croix de Fer (frameset only). My LBS is offering me a 10% discount on list, am I likely to get any more than that elsewhere/online? Any good suggestions?
Epic had offered me just under 10% off before Christmas but have got back to me today saying the best they can now do is list price so they are off the list.0 -
