Road frameset disc

Hi
I'm looking at building a disc brake road bike mainly for winter riding and the odd sportive when I don't fancy using my summer bike. Looking at Genesis croix de fer but wondered if anyone had any suggestions for similar kind of money or any deals out there.
Any suggestions on a wheelset with disc hubs would also be appreciated. As it stands I literally have everything for the build apart from frame and wheels!
Or as a mate suggested am I better selling off the groupset and parts and just getting the new Boardman CX for £600?!
Cheers for the help.

Hi, I'm in a similar position to you. At the moment the Kinesis crosslight pro6 is top of my list, really want a frame set with mudguard eyes which the Kinesis has, their cxdisc wheelsets also look good. Any other suggestions from others, and owners experiences of the pro6 and the Genesis also appreciated.0

I got one of the Chinese cyclocross frames and it's brilliant

great value as a frameset (£599) and ridiculous value with 105 as a full build.

Flanders colours are awesome, I don't normally like planet x styling but this is rather spiffing!0 -

Which supplier did you use Pryally? I have thought about a future disc brake cross build, the planet x price and design is pretty good and hard to justify going down the china direct route ( I have a china direct road frame BTW).0 -

Agree with that!I'm sorry you don't believe in miracles0 -
Save your shackles go direct to China ..... Sometimes things come in the same boxes

Agree... wish they kept it a bit less flamboyant (smaller Belgian flags, like the Condor Terra for instance). The Flanders lion should be on a yellow background or it's not a Flanders lion... also I hate press fit bearings and for CX they don't make any sense. Other than that, awesome valueleft the forum March 20230 -

A-baygoods of eBay - approx £310 inc postage. Better value than the dd frame only price but not sure if you are buying complete bike from Planet X. I didn't want to go this route as wheels and kit supplied by Planet X isn't what I wanted on this build0 -

Epic Cycles will sell you a Genesis Frame for 10% below rrp so the Equilibrium will be £500 or the Fugio would be £675. Rather have the Fugio whan the PX tbh.0

I was going to get a Boardman in the summer when the 2013 model were going for about £650. It was a great deal and I went to take a look in the shop. Nice bikes and a great price but I just could not do it - don't know why. IMO If I were you I would be going for a steel bike and TBH the Genesis range are goof VFM be it CDF, Equilibrium or Fugio.0 -
That's my thoughts exactly. Boardman looks great value and will do exactly what I need it for well but just can't bring myself to get one?! Is the equilibrium worth the extra cash over croix? Looks like a lesser quality steel (631 to 725) or am I reading that wrong??
Any thoughts on wheels? Thinking maybe hope or XT hubs on archetypes?0 -

Let's face it, Boardman are unexciting and look grey... IME there is no difference between decent grades of steel and 725/631 are all very decent. I am now on 853, same thing with a better fork (carbon). I would expect the Equilibrium to be lighter and overall a better frame... the CdF is now a bit dated... cheaper though.
Your thoughts on wheels are excellent thoughts of courseleft the forum March 20230 -
Thanks Ugo. Would you go Hope or XT? Is it worth the extra for Hope?
Does this sound right? According to halfords the cx comp weighs less for the whole bike than the equilibrium frame? (About 11kg all in compared to 11.2kg on genesis website). Not the biggest issue just seemed wrong.0 -

The weight of the Equilibrium is for the bike, which sounds about right. The Boardman is alloy, so it will be a bit lighter for the same type of bike, that's inevitable.
I would go for the newer XT 785. Hope are nice, come in all colours are a tad lighter... but 3 times the price is a bit too much.... they don't even give you QR skewersleft the forum March 20230 -
Thanks Ugo just realised the stupidity of my mistake!! Leaning towards equilibrium or croix0
-
M785 hubs are simply excellent but if you have Hope money them buy the XTR hubs these are sublime and light. Shimano have the CX-75 hubs out now 28H and 10/11 speed. These would look great on grey archetypes with silver spokes.
I'd go for the equilibrium but this bike come with black archetypes on the older M756 XT hubs which are just heavy. I actually want an equilbrium disc frame, with the right kit it can be built into a reasonably light bike.http://www.thecycleclinic.co.uk -wheel building and other stuff.0 -
Thanks cycleclinic. Yep I'm only interested in the frameset. Have got a sram force groupset I stripped off a previous bike after 100miles or so so will put that on and build up with various bits and pieces I've got in garage. Any deals on genesis frames anywhere? Seen 10% in a few places.0

I think Genesis are quite careful with their retailers... I have never seen more than a 10% price reduction, even with Evans, unless it's last year's stuff... they are Madison after all, which means they won't sell their stuff cheap to the retailer in the first place.
I think you get what you pay for... have you seen any thread with reported problems on Genesis frames? I have not...left the forum March 20230 -
Cycle gear . com is doing the croix at £332 at the moment...it was a few quid cheaper last week when I got mine but that's still not a bad price. (it includes delivery too) They also do the Fugio at £637.
http://www.ukbikesdepot.com/products.ph ... ist&cat=90
I'm still waiting for mine to turn up so can't say from experience how good a retailer they are...but so far their communication has been good and they seem to get good reviews online
http://www.reviewcentre.com/reviews264686.html
Langsett cycles were also doing the Croix frameset for £318 between Christmas and New year. It's back to rrp now...but no harm in giving them a call to see if they'd do a deal.....0 -
That's really helpful thanks for that. Fugio looks great but just that bit too much. Just need to decide if I need to spend more for the equilibrium when croix looks like it'll do the job I need it for with no hassle.
You're right Ugo I've never seen a disgruntled genesis owner complaining on any forums!0 -
rudivoller22 wrote:You're right Ugo I've never seen a disgruntled genesis owner complaining on any forums!
Steel frames in general don't give much grief... no cracked tubes if you over torque a bolt, no self-distruction if the bike falls off at the cafe'... they cope well with wear and tear, they take the odd dent without too much hassle.. there is very little that can go wrong and there is virtually nothing that actually does go wrong. I bet their returns % are a fraction of those Specialized have to deal withleft the forum March 20230 -
Between the CDF and Equilibrium it really depends on the tyre size you want to run. Up to 28mm = Equilibrium, over 28mm = CDF.0

So I'm looking at croix/equilibrium frameset, sram force groupset, XT/archetype wheels - how does that sound? Am I missing anything?0
