Condor Super Acciaio Build

  • This is a luxury build. You have to do it right. Every bit. I went for the stainless because, for some reason, the black of the chrome moly would have bugged me. Don't know why. But for this build you have to do it perfect.

I think I'm probably done with mine. Probably. I considered the new SRAM Red brakes but, being silver, I thought they lacked something compared to the old black SRAM Red ones. So I think I'm done. Probably......

  • Lol you don't seem to sure of that statement "you think your done". This was never meant to be a luxury build, it was just meant to be components that I know and liked using, not sure how it's ended up like this. Still not sure on wheels yet, I had always assumed I would buy the racing zeros but I keep looking at carbon rims and thinking would I regret not buying some. Still want to try and keep the wheel weight below 1500 and the price below 1000. Had a look at the ffwd wheels and some Easton's but would really love the dura ace c50's though out of my budget. Can anyone recommend some non deep profile carbon rims for this price range?
  • I always think I'm done :D

Anyway, on wheels. I went from FFWD F4r on the old bike to Racing 3 on this. For me the 3's are better for this build. But, if you shop around, it's perfectly easy to find the F4R and f6r for good money, sometimes with the DT Swiss hubs. Really good build and roll very well.

I think the Super is capable of carrying Carbon rims off better than the stock Acciaio though. For mine I'd not really consider carbon rims, unless they were the Hyperion or something.

Looking forward to seeing this fully assembled. Looks like it's going to be a stunner.
  • coming on slowly. Having real problems sourcing the 3T LTD Ionica seat post in the right size, everywhere is sold out and not due in until mid feb. Only got wheels to source after that which I'm still really undecided on, can't decide on light alloy clinchers or slighter deeper all carbon rims. All depends on money i suppose.
On the plus side, i got all bolts torqued down and all cables in place so starting to look more like a bike.
Hoping to have this completed maybe next month as need paid before i can bring up the subject of wheels with my better half.
  • quick question to you all, I'm currently running a compact crank with an 11/25 rear. I can find myself coping well with most climbs up to about 18%, however I'm thinking of going for a 12/28 on this build as i have two very hilly sportives due this year (alford king of the mountain and the 3pistes), also got etape but its not to hilly. I can't quite decide if i should go for the 12/28 or if i should stick with the 11/25 as one of the sportives has a 15 mile 20% decent which will be fun and would like the bigger gears for.
If I'm running an 11 speed cassette is there going to be a huge jump between each gear on the 12/28? or would the 11/25 handle the bigger climbs without problems?
I know it all depends on my power and fitness but just unsure how much of a jump there will be between each gear on the 12/28.
or do i got for an 11/28 which seems like a HUGE range o gears….. :?

OR DO I AVOID THE DURA ACE 9000 CASSETTE COMPLETELY CONSIDERING THE NUMBER THAT HAVE EXPLODED / BROKEN CARBON SPIDERS WHICH WORRIES ME ALOT

I would say stick with the cassette you have for the moment - a new bike will feel different due to little changes in geo, weight distribution etc so if you continue with the same ratios you'll have one less set of variables

    nice bike :)

I actually think that's over wheeled. It's nice. But not perfect, as one of the posts claims.

  • Kinda agree, cracking looking build but not a huge fan of the wheels. Loving the gold chain and crank. He has brought this in around 7kg !!!!!

Yup, I agree. The wheels are a bit deep, those saddles look nasty and those inlines posts look whack.

However, compared to most of the bike on here with sky high stems and loads of spacers, it's a looker.

A lot of the bikes on here get ridden rather than just looked at

:?: I'm sure the chap in that link rides his bike. Half the bikes on here just look like they've been thrown together with little thought about fit.
  • They may look that way. Or they may have been assembled with every thought as to fit. Funny thing people, all different.

Massive saddle-bar drop ≠ well thought out fit

Why not? I am perfectly comfortable with a big saddle-bar drop and get less comfortable the higher the bars are. It's just a matter of personal preference and flexibility.

    Road - Dolan Preffisio
    MTB - On-One Inbred

I have no idea what's going on here.

    :D

It's just alot of bikes on here looks as if the owner couldnt be arsed to cut the steerer, so they just threw a load of stem spacers on instead. Or they felt a pain in their neck so they decided to flip their stem up. Or they were struggling to reach the brakes so they rotated their bars backward.

If you spend a bit of time refining your position, thne running alot of bar drop isnt a problem at all.

I don't think peeps realize that larger riders have massive drops. Look at Ryan Trebon's http://www.cxmagazine.com/wp-content/up ... 767_11.jpg or Hesjedal's bikes. Same with Steegmans and Sieberg. Ok, Hansen's a bit of a freak. Even the tall guy on here with the Betty Leeds has a big drop: viewtopic.php?f=40044&t=12953521.

If you can ride it great, if you can't, don't hate. Seeing a bike sans rider is ~40% of the picture. It's not convenient but I think it'd be much more instructive if people posted themselves ON their bikes, 1- 2 hrs into a ride and at 85-90% of their max. That's the best way to judge b/c it's when the fit gremlins make themselves known.

    If you want a 11-28 just buy Ultegra, they're < £50, a veritable bargain! http://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/sp/road-t ... himcass931

  • Well finally starting to come close to finishing this build. New wheels and tyres ordered yesterday so should be here tomorrow. Last piece of the puzzle will be the seat post but may use the one i have in the mean time just to get it built up.
New wheels that I've ordered are Shimano Dura Ace 9000 C24. had originally thought i would get the racing zeros but the C24's just seem to be exactly what I'm looking for.
If they turn up tomorrow should have some pics online by the evening of a pretty close to finished bike. :D:D:D
  • Well thats it pretty much finished, just got the forks to cut down and still waiting for the 3t LTD carbon seat post. Apart from that its done. May re-do my bar tape though as I'm not to happy with it.
Sorry for the crap pics to, I'm no photographer

  • How many rolls of bar tape did you use? :-)

Looks good. Love the DA wheels and 4000s tyres: performant, dependable, not silly expensive, handsome.

How far have your ridden with that bar position up to now?

    Keep on truckin'

  • Haven't ridden it at all yet, just finished it today. Just used the normal two rolls of tape but may take it off and reapply it as it's not as neat as I would like.
Although this build was meant to be a money no object kind of build you do still have to apply some common sense, the wheels for example could have been deep carbon rims but it doesn't suit my riding or the kind of runs I go out on. It's usually wet in aberdeen and plenty of hills so a shallow light rim is just what I need. So far very happy with how it's turned out.
As for the gp4000s, I love them, got them fitted to my focus izalko and never had an issue with then .

I think that looks stunning :D

    Great job.
  • Yeah, fair do's.......that's a really nice machine you have there. All in weight - what is it please?
  • No weight yet as I was waiting to change the seatpost. Definitely feels lighter than my focus izalko. Will be interesting to see what it comes in at
  • what BB did you fit in there mate ?
  • It's a press fit ceramic bb30 along with a ceramic headset. Slightly indulgent but thought I would give it a try.
  • Do you notice much difference in the ceramic BB & headset compared to a normal version?

    Lovely bike, lovely house!
  • The only difference I initially noticed is that it's very smooth, the cranks don't seem to spin any differently but it just feels more controlled if that makes sense. House is just rented as we're about to move, it's not bad though
