I can't understand how a guy who has obviously been successful in business can be so damned stupid. No doubt that one will get pulled pretty smartish. I think he needs to contain his inner chimp.

My thoughts exactly. I can't see how any rider would want to ride on a time with someone like this in charge. Stacks of cash would be one incentive. I also can't see how the Kalaschnikow statement is any worse than Donald Sterling's (NBA, LA Clippers) recent awful faux pas.

Tinkov still owns over 50% of the stock so will be sitting on a very big paper loss.

Plus all Russian stocks are down but not by this much.
I hope theres enough money to pay the riders

Just been looking at both the twitter feeds and either it has been totally deleted or it is a fake.

Either way somebody has a poor sense of humour.

Unfortunately it seems to have been the former. Plenty of evidence still all over the web.

Not long after he became involved with cycling I came to conclusion that he was a total knob. Needless to say I haven't changed that opinion. Why any cyclist would want to get involved with him, goodness knows. I understand the people on the bottom rung maybe as they need to pay the bills but not anyone higher up the food chain

Unfortunately, yes, it seems that plenty do. I don't know if he is or isn't but I'm not sure is good for the human race.

Well, he's a successful businessman. But he's a poor excuse for a human being. As fan of this sport, I'd rather his money was spent elsewhere, regardless of how difficult sponsorship is to get.

Is there anything in the UCI charter/rules that allows him to be disciplined for bringing the sport into disrepute? It's a discussion about contract negotiations with a rider which has led to that disgraceful comment.
It's only a bit of sport, Mun. Relax and enjoy the racing.
  • That's what I thought, there's a precedent in football for players being fined etc for things they've said on Twitter

Isn't that just getting fined by their club though? They've all got some sort if catch all club reputation clause in their contracts. There might be a fine from the F A for bringing the game into disrepute if they called a referee a cheat I suppose.

  • There's quite a few charged by the FA, including Jason Puncheon's rant about Neil Warnock and Ashley Cole in the link below with his #BUNCHOFT***TS tweet

"The son of a Siberian miner, Tinkov grew
up in the town of Leninsk-Kuznetsky in east
Russia. He took up bicycle racing while
studying mining at an institute in St.
Petersburg . In the glasnost era of the
1980s, he quit his studies and opened a
    business called Technoshock importing
electronics. He sold this in 1997 to open a
    convenience food company and eventually,
the brewery and brewpub business, Tinkoff
    brewery."

He seems like a guy who wasn't given anything and worked for it. If we looked into the detail of most businesses we would find things we don't agree with.

The fact he speaks his mind is refreshing, rather than PR combed media. He just needs to take a couple of minutes before he reacts on social media. His initial thought when responding should be "I'm talking to the world here".

Personally I can't agree with that at all. There's no excuse, whether he's self made or not and ,no, I don't find it refreshing either.

    Seconded/thirded/whatever.

As an aside, does the UCI not have rules in place along the lines of "bringing the sport into disrepute".

Bringing the sport into disrepute ! I think he goes over the top at times but we should keep this in perspective. I'd rather team owners and managers gave us their opinions straight - I don't want the trolling that Tinkov endulges in sometimes but then I don't want the Sky PR bullshit either - I don't think either merits a charge though.

Does anyone fail to see the difference between speaking his mind and his apparent comments regarding the Norwegian gun massacre? He's allowed to get away with comments that would get most high profile people in big trouble.

To keep it in perspective have a look at some of the relatively mild things footballers get fined for under the charge of disrepute. Many other sports have similar.

Does seem odd indeed, as his statement Re the gun massacre were massivly insensitive

The billionaires who really need a kicking are those with Cameron/Putin/Obama's phone number. They don't waste time competing for sickest frat-boy on Twitter: Tinkov's on a podium btw. These merchants of mind poison are too busy defrauding millions of your fellow citizens with willfully useless insurance policies, indulging in a little pre-supper Libor manipulation, or frying the planet with freedom enhancing greenhouse emissions - lethal gas.

Returning some of the indefensible bile hurled by ludicrous twitter personae is completely indefensible in this case. But it can also be considered a public service if it wakes people up to what these crooks get up to in private.
