Looking to upgrade the grips on my RR 8.1 and having read some reviews and scrolled through various forum discussions I've narrowed it down to those below (not necessarily the suppliers, but the grips).

Any thoughts out there or alternatives up to £25.00?

Race Face Half Nelson Grey or Blue - £17.99 @ CRC

ODI X-Treme Elements Black, Grey or White - £19.02 @ Tredz

  • Can't see how an upgrade are grips!

Anyhow, I use superstar, cheap but wear quickish, but doesn't matter really as they are that cheap and you can get just the cartridges.
  • No need to spend so much. I cant tell the difference between the ODI ruffians I used to have and the Tokens linked below:

    +1 for the Tokens.

They've been out of stock of black lockrings for ages though.

Well, the standard grips on my RR are pretty rubbish, the grips I'm looking at are (apparently) better (and grips are categorised as 'components' in most places), so if they were to replace the ones I already have, that's an upgrade right?

I have used these for years on different bikes (not the same set obv) and love them. Super comfy and don't wear too fast:

However, for my new build I thought I'd try these SDG Hansolos in black:
    http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/sdg- ... -prod82547

I have these in red on my BMX and now see you can get lock-on version for MTB, so if I don't get on with the Hansolos I'll probably get a set:

Grips are very subjective though, you never know until you try them out unfortunately and what looks great can feel horrible or vise versa.

These are cheap, look good, take years to wear out and are comfy (I ride with gloves though). end caps fall off in crashes though but bar plugs cost 50p so it doesnt really matter
  • When i next need grips i do like the look of lizard skins peaty:

I like my brand x ones from CRC - only £5. On One maybe? I wouldn't spend much myself.

I'm still not sure what the OP expects here, what is 'rubbish' about the existing grips?

The left side has worn somewhat already and I've only ridden the bike a dozen times and the right has a split in it. In addition to that, I don't find them that comfortable when riding without my gloves.

So, whilst I don't 'expect' anything, as that would be rude of me, I'm hoping I can get some views, opinions and advice on what I could/ should buy to replace what I currently have, especially as I'm a noob and don't have much knowledge of the various manufacturers out there and their products etc (I'm slowly trying to learn and I'm subscribed to What Mountain Bike and MBUK).

In the meantime, I am posting in 'MTB Buying Advice' right, or did I take a wrong turn somewhere?:wink: (banter - my knickers aren't really in a twist).

Thanks for clarifying, my aim here was to make sure that when giving buying advice you got the benefit you wanted.....not what you thought you wanted (there being a subtle but critical difference)
I've found that grips that work the best with gloves can often feel a bit 'sharp' without them, so you may need to decide how you will ride.
I'm a fan of foam grips, lightweight, abosrb trail buzz well and you can get a range of shapes to suite, I have the KCNC/Avenir/Pork rind generic on my commuter which I find very comfy and they can be had fairly cheap (circa £8), fit with liguid soap and they stay in place (even on carbon bars) yet are very easy to remove, I avoid the cheaper ones and have been very disapointed with the exotic ones I have (two soft and squidgy for control), The Bontrager and Ritchey ones have more of a 'barrel' shape and are rated highly by many. Lockons are only an 'upgrade' if you don't mind the extra weight and want the conveniance of easy removal, otherwise for a non foam grip Renthal Kevlar are simply brilliant, very hard wearing, comfy without gloves and skin and gloves grip to them like poo on a blanket.

You'd have to be massively anal to worry about the weight of a pair of grips...

Probably the easist place to lose weight for not a lot of cash.

So do all that AND save weight on the grips......did you have a point as I can't see one!

My point being that the grips are your contact with the bike - to choose them based on a weight saving equivalent to a packet of crisps (rather than comfort and control) would be ridiculous. Each to their own, but I think foam grips feel awful, and on a wet day they'll soon be heavier than rubber ones.

You could argue it all adds up to a bigger saving, but I do think choosing grips based on weight takes it a bit too far.

I feel zero difference for having ti rotor and ti calliper bolts.

Not really. Worked out around 50p per bolt, which isn't that bad for ti.
