I've got to agree with this,

The TdF is French, they shouldn't let it leave. As for the UK govmnt putting in £10m of funding  - £10m would be better spent helping to make our ToB much better/bigger/longer, we should invest in our own race not somebody else's.

And don't get me started on the Giro going to Belfast FFS
Do you think that investing £10 million in the Tour of Britain would have given Yorkshire that worldwide 'top 3 destinations to visit according to Lonely Planet' advertisement?

The Tour de France has started abroad since 1954, and personally I think it's a good thing. The spectator numbers abroad are always larger (apart from Alpe d'Huez perhaps). Comparing the Tour de France with the Tour of Britain in international scope is silly. Unlike any other cycle race it is both a national and international in character at the same time. It's the world's main cycling event, not just France's. I see it a bit as the English language: belonging to the world and to its original country/ies both at the same time. Requires a tricky balance. Perhaps two years in a row is overdoing it, if Grand Departs become so costly no region in France can afford it anymore there is a problem, and I think there is some sense in sticking to countries roughly neighbouring France, but a couple of stages outside France now and then, yes please.

    Ha!

Reminds me of an old boss of mine who was once arguing, in a pub, with one of his peers about who was most northern. He was from Yorkshire, his peer from Alnwick in Northumberland. His argument was simple, all southerners thought Yorkshire was the north and anywhere north of Newcastle was in Scotland, so southerners would assume his peer was a sweaty.

I've got to agree with this,
Then why did the French build the Channel Tunnel.
Most of the share holders were French. :!:

In 1994 people said to me :- Nah, Nah your TDF won't be using the Tunnel because it won't be ready in time.
My answer was :- you don't know the French and the TDF is viewed by their bureaucracy like, the UK Royalty parades over here, It will happen.
and so it came to pass that the first contract goods (TDF) did pass through the Tunnel in July 1994.

PS - put the HS2 up the M1 through Yorkshire.

  • Well im not normally wrong but after a lovely piece of humble pie with my brew i have to confess that Yorkshire is extremely beautiful. I thought that after slagging it off id venture over the M6 and visit the Dales. Scenery stunning, people very welcoming and it was even sunny. Still think the towns of Leeds and Sheffield are sh****les though.
  • I know that its old news now but with all the amazing areas in the UK they could have opted for why on earth choose Yorkshire for the Tour start. Was it simply ba question of money, if so i can understand that but otherwise im baffled. The stage routes are average at best, nothing really testing or interesting. The weather over there is invariably crap, the towns positively dull and the people often not the most animated. Thats before we get onto the abysmal track record of police support, or lack of, in relation to road racing and the fiasco years ago over a TOB stage which had to be neutralised because of some sort of policing/marshalling/escorting issue.
I would have much prefered stages around the Lake District, Snowdonia or the Southwest. Areas that are far more impressive and particuarly the SW who have always showed a huge amount of support for British RR.
I am waiting with eager anticipation to be enlightened.

    You're from Lancashire right?

Simply - Yorkshire put the money and time in to getting it. Everyone else including Lancashire then whinges because they (the TDF) didn't 'just' give it to them.

  • My word thats an old photo though judging by the age of that car it could be Halifax, Bradford or Leeds. No Chester is a far nicer part of Cheshire. Head West for the Welsh hills, South for the Shropshire lanes or East for the Cheshire lanes. Birds round here are fitter too and that is a fact!!

    1.York beats Chester hand down.
    2. None of the nice places you listed above are in Cheshire.
    3. Halifax, Bradford and Leeds are surrounded by stunning Yorkshire country side hence why the tour de France is going through Yorkshire.

By all means you and others should push for the tour to go through Cheshire - there is stunning road section near Runcorn for example:

Runcorn & Widnes are in Halton (an invented borough name, because if they had called it 'Runcorn & Widnes' or 'Widnes & Runcorn' there would be fighting in the streets...)

    Halton is in Merseycide

Ermmm......I do believe I put a wink at the end of that statement. It is meant as a joke.

Anyway, North Yorkshire" is" near Durham. Its the last county in the midlands, just before you get to County Durham, which is in the North. :D

Found this in my old emails and thought it a worthy addition to this discussion:

Once upon a time in the Kingdom of Heaven God went missing for six days. Eventually, Archangel Michael found him on the seventh day resting. He enquired of God, 'Where have you been?'
God pointed downwards through the clouds. Archangel Michael looked puzzled and said, 'What is it?'
'It's a planet,' replied God, 'and I've put LIFE on it. I'm going to call it Earth and it's going to be a great place of balance.'
    'Balance?' inquired Michael, still confused.
God explained, pointing down to different parts of the Earth. 'For example, North America will be a place of great opportunity and wealth, while South America is going to be poor; the Middle East over there will be a hot spot, and Russia will be a cold spot. Over there I've placed a continent of white people and over there is a continent of black people.'
God continued, pointing to the different countries. 'This one will be extremely hot and arid while this one will be very cold and covered in ice.'
The Archangel , impressed by God's work, then pointed to another area of land and asked, 'What's that?'
'Ah,' said God. That's the North of England, the most glorious place on earth. There are beautiful people, seven Premiership football teams in the North West alone, and many impressive cities; it is the home of the world's finest artists, musicians, writers, thinkers, explorers and politicians. The people from the North of England are going to be modest, intelligent and humorous and they're going to be found travelling the world. They'll be extremely sociable, hard-working and high-achieving, and they will be known throughout the world as speakers of truth.'
Michael gasped in wonder and admiration but then proclaimed, 'What about balance God, you said there will be BALANCE!'
God replied very wisely, 'Wait till you see the bunch of tossers I'm putting in the South !'

Then go about another 100 miles and you get to the start of the North
  • But that part of the north will soon have no one in it. If Mr Sammond gets his way.
