I'm surprised that the mods haven't waded in yet with the standard "Nobody likes ads but they pay for the site so please have the class not to whine about them" response yet

They have, on this thread and several others.

So, still no USEFUL response from the mods? Is this section "Discuss the website with the team", or should it be renamed "Make several valid points to the team, but continue to be ignored" ?

    Quite insulting, but not surprising.

err mods and admins have nothing to say as we have nothing to add. not our pay grade.

Certain ads are making the site unreadable. The scrolling ads are merely annoying, but the Betfair one covers the text on my ipad and I am clearly very stupid as I can't find a way to turn it off.

I appreciate we must have adverts, but do they have to be so intrusive?

  • Same here.

You can bet your life the moderators will do sod all to help.

They may not be the site owners but they are higher up the food chain than us.

Came on here to complain about bet fair add, look like someone beat me too it.

To owners / developers, intrusive ads simply mean we will end up blocking all ads, as your revenue from them is most likely click based is this what you really want?

A cop out, it *is* your responsibility to raise this with the powers that be. Even if it's just the ads making the site unusable on an iPad. It's probably a simple fix, but as long as you continue to wash you hands nothing will get done.

I've done just this, so they get nothing now. Result :)

Answer further up the thread. One point of note if you click through different forums / threads a few times you stop getting ads, at least I did this morning. Maybe there is something in there that only shows you so many ads per day per user, then stops. This would make sense, if I was going to click on them I would have done so by now. Anyone else found this?

On an iPad if you go to your DNS, in wifi under settings and put this number in followed by a comma 74.53.155.162 in front of the number that is already there

    Worked for me

Err we have and when the devs get around to being able to look at it I am sure they will.

Nice swerve, AGAIN. It seems like you're all happy to wield the power of the banning stick, but when it comes to making some real effort to improve things around here, you (collectively) don't want to know.

So, exactly how do WE the users get to discuss the website with anyone in the team who might be able to do something to address our concerns? We're in the right place on the forum, so why is nobody listening?

The ads on this website are more intrusive than on any other site I use. It's bad enough having the screen reformat half way through reading something to accommodate the banner ads, but the bloody Betfair ad takes the biscuit.

They can drag their heels as much as they like now as I don't get a single advert even on iPad

Looks like the advertisers strategy is backfiring

a word has just been changed in my last post to a ** sentence**. How completely ridiculous and childish!!! Grow up and treat people like adults. What a joke. You have the right to display ads, I have the right on my computer to try and remove them if i don't wish to view them. The word in question is A*D* B*L*O*C*K*E*R !!!!!!!!!!!

Actually i don't think i am asking how i can reduce their income. if they are paid for showing their ads then they will still be paid. If they are paid by me clicking on an ad link then they will not make a single penny out of me anyway as i do not click on these ads and have no intention of doing so. If they are so keen to make money out of me then charge a subscription for the use of the forum.
I didn't realise it was against the rules to ask a question on a public forum, silly me, soon as i finish this i will write my lines, i must use google, i must use google!!
rather than moaning i would say pi$$ed off that a word used in other threads gets changed. Ridiculous , we should be treated like the adults we are, i'm sure we can cope.

The Advertising Standards Authority controls adverts in print media and online. I wonder if they have a code about adverts rendering content unreadable?

The ASA's only remit is to maintain standards in terms of advertising content, taste and legality. The publication's editor is the final arbiter of what is contained in his/her publication and how it appears in print (or online) - although the publisher might disagree with that.

Let's clear a few things up. I understand that some of the adverts are frustrating, but there is nothing that the mods and the main forum admin can do - we do not have the authority, never mind the tools to change how adverts work. However we can, and do, put the these subjects to the site developers on a regular basis, and urge them to look at these threads. It frustrates us to, believe me. Especially as they do not reply and the we take the fall.

So what can we do? I'd urge people to email the site developers at Future. As plainly this is not getting solved here. I'll continue to push for solutions, but I am limited in what I can actually do.

What are their contact details then? I did ask Mr L earlier!

If I was responsible for moderating a public forum, possibly on a voluntary basis (I have no idea if you're paid, and I don't want you tell me if you are or aren't) and my management chain were ignoring me, I'd resign.

Which is pretty much what I'd do in any actual job, too.

Same here. Cheers (I know Mikey23 posted it earlier).

If you're using an iPad and still moaning about the ads, this is the solution.

The 74.53.155.162 prefix doesn't seem to get rid of ads elsewhere - like in my copy of Procycling - which is disappointing.
I was hoping that 74.53.155.162 would become to real life what the number 42 was to The Hitchhiker's Guide...
