Right... just been out and done the super scientific test.

Put a different wheel with a Vitorria 23 tyre on the bike. Around 10mm clearance. Put the Conti 25 in, absolutely none. Couldn't be closer without jamming if I tried. New 25mm tyres from a different manufacturer, go down to 23s from Conti or run a 23 front and 25 rear?

New wheels with 23mm rims is the eventual solution but don't have the funds just now.

I run 25mm Conti 4000's on my 23mm rims and will go down to 23's next. Clearance is a bit tight with the 25's.

Sorted the issue for the meantime by sticking a spare Conti UltraRace 23 on my front wheel. Kept the 25 on the back.

Now that is what a bike should look like, I think that is one of the nicest bikes I have ever seen.

    Top job !

Hi. According to Shand you need long reach brakes for this bike as the design allows for 28mm tyres and mudguards. I see you have Campag Athena brake calipers so how did you get them to fit or did Shand adjust the F&F to suit a standard brake caliper? :?

Get some handbuilts. Royce hubs would go nicely.

It's just a hill. Get over it.

Been looking at the same frame as well. Look lovelier in the flesh.

One thing that did intrigue me was that it states in the review on TWMP that it takes 28s withe the standard Athena calipers. Is this not the case then?

Not according to Shand but they appear to fit ok on this example....

    Howdy!

On my frame, I have plenty of tyre clearance on the rear wheel running the Campag wheels with Conti 25c tyre. Front wheel, it's much tighter (as mentioned above) and I've reverted to running a 23 on that but I reckon with a wider rim (23mm) and a tyre thats ACTUALLY a 25 (continentals do seem to come up bigger than quoted, close to a 28) there would be plenty of clearance there too. As for the brake reach, there is plenty of room for adjustment on the front brakes with standard drop calipers. The rear wheel is a different story though and I only JUST managed to get the pads to line up with the rim but it was very very close, so I removed the pads/holders and modified the arms of the brake ever so slightly to let the pad drop down an extra mm which meant I could use matching Athena brakes (Campag don't make a long drop version, as far as I know). I have a workshop with fairly decent precision tools to do it with though (i'm a guitar technician by trade) so I don't know if people would want to do this at home.

As for mudguards though, I don't know because I've never owned any! I just clean bikes a lot.

Perhaps Mccaria would be able to give some info re: clearance on his Skinnymalinky? (If you're reading this mate! :D )

    Hi,

Sat on a Goan beach, 30' and 90% humidity, so not thinking much about mudguards at present ! It's a tough life but someone has to do it.

On brakes - Shand said standard calipers would work but that it would be a tighter fit and recommended longer drops. I went with the Shimano (650?) which give plenty of space. I am running the Vittoria Pave tyres which are 24 mm with no problems. So far have not fitted mudguards, I have got some ready to fit, but really like the look of the frame without guards.

LOVELY BIKE ---have also gone with Shand and just got the Stoater; Landrover green with white forks---takes up to 32 mm tyres at least, discs. Built up with Campag Centaur 10 , Novatech jubs with Open Pros (Harry Rowlands build), Gille Berthoud leather saddle---Looks fabulous like yours and it runs beautifully indeed :). Responsive yet smooth riding it, intended as all year bike, Audax bike. Worth the wait and built in Scotland too :D

For your mudguards I`d think Portland Design works would go nicely---I use a set with EC 90 forka, 24 mm Pave tyres and there is clearance

After all the talk of getting the proper classy silver wheels with traditional spoke patterns etc. etc. I had a serious hub failure on the original silver campag wheels. I needed a 'get me going again' set of wheels ASAP and this is what my LBS sorted me out with. They're actually really good and I'm starting to get used to the retro/modern mixed look but I understand that many of you will cry sacrilige! thought I'd post a pic just to document it in it's current form.

They really don't suit the bike - I've heard they're good wheels but that needs something retro :)

    Road - Dolan Preffisio
    MTB - On-One Inbred

I have no idea what's going on here.
  • Doesn't match as well as the previous wheels but that doesn't look bad at all.

    :D

Gonna be a while until the financial situation allows me to revisit the intended appearance of the bike but worry not, it shall happen! For now I'm just glad to be riding.

Did those wheels come with a paper bag to put over your head? :( They could not look much more out of place!

Lovely bike though, I actually quite liked the campy wheels on it, too.

eagerly awaiting a Shand Skinny--finished in burgundy with Wound up carbon forks :D

Will be my `best` Audax bike to be built up with Campag Centaur / Hope / Open Pro wheels / Vittoria Paves 27mm / PDW mudguards --replacing a weld failure Ti machine

Have a Stoater already which is a GREAT do it all disc equipped bike but wanting a slightly zingier ride for summer

Well bike received early jan---slight hiccup with couriers TNT losing frame for two weeks---but eventually here.

And a really lovely ride quality too :D Irons out road chatter , cattle grids so smooth and quick feeling ride as well. 27mm tyres fit easily within mudguards which makes it great for winter riding on the now standard poor road surfaces, WoundUp forks now fitted to replace temporary VN ones and saddle nose tilt now brought down !

I just make sure I ride faster than the people gossiping about how the wheels look wrong, so I don't hear them.
