..take it you've all got your "warning" email...? ....seem to be missing the point that its not actually going to be cold?..

    I had a good laugh.

I've just been out for 25ish miles to loosen the legs. It was raining on and off but I was dripping with sweat anyway. So humid today. Garmin says average temp was 24C... Won't be wearing long fingered gloves if it's like that!

massive case of ass covering but all they are doing is scaring inexperienced riders who think they are going to get hit by a falling tree and die of hypothermia in the wilds of Surrey.

Exactly, all they really needed to say was make sure you have arm warmers and a gilet in a jersey pocket for if you feel you need them. I find that's more than enough if it gets a bit wet when it's warm.

So a headwarmer and neoprene overshoes might be a bit OTT then?

im wearing full winter gear now

I think you're dangerously unprepared. I've got my Mum to cancel her holiday and drive as close round the route as she can in case I need to stop for an emergency cup of tea. :D

    Where are you looking?

Met office one is better than my last look.

Am I missing something here, I have just seen someone on the commuting forum pull out of the ride due to the conditions? I thought it was just a bit of rain and not an attack from Godzilla!

Surely it will be mild temp wise so you can stay warm easy enough

Have we got to contend with a giant reptilian dinosaur like monster as well? Thought this was meant to be easy...

Sounds like they've suddenly decided to make up for it being a flat route.

  • I know advanced forecasts are unreliable and we're dealing with a great deal of uncertainty here, but at what point are we going to know for sure if there will be giant reptillian dinosaur monsters on the route? Because that's a bridge too far for me.

Wrong, he pulled out because he's damaged his back. Hence the comment "can't risk it with injury." He's been saying he hopes to be fit enough for ages.

It's coming.. I spotted a rat on the canal path today roughly the size of a stegosaurus

  • The worst bit is going to be waiting around at the start, having to stand around for so long could mean getting cold. At least when we start we can keep warm.

You mean the perfect storm of people panicking on interweb forums?
Now if I have discs and mudguards does that mean people may follow me too closely due to the lack of spray, and hit the back of me if I brake suddenly to avoid a sharktopus?
Apparently there's a high risk of them being washed up in the large waves due to hit Surrey.
  • Sharktopi? Right, I'm out.

Makes it a bit more interesting.

    Throwaway shoe covers
    Mits
Gilet (if you don't have one don't buy one)
    Nutrition
Extra tubes (crap in the road)
Caution (take it easy and finish, time not important)

Its going to be at least 18oC, far from a cold ride.

With the wind chill probably -2oC though

But when you add in the ice breathing dragons you could be taking -15oC

Face it guys, you are all going to die on sunday in the arctic conditions being forecast. Might as well do so in a blaze of glory.

The long alpine descent of the fearsome Col du Box Hill is going to freeze us all to death.

I've decided a summer base with an Altura Transformer over is the way to go, with a club gilet for the start line. Two water proof layers and an option for sleeveless should cover it, even though is a fashion disaster - red gilet over flouro anyone?

I plan to stop and remove the gilet in the shelter of the blackwall tunnel 8)

anyone record this with Strava on an iPhone last year ?

Recorded half the route as didn't want the phone to run out and wanted some pics at the end of the race. Just wondering if anyone got the battery to last the full 100 miles
My Samsung Galaxy S3 used about 80% battery in 7 hours, recording on Strava and uploading using Greenalp Route Tracker. I had a spare though in case it ran out.

Just take a spare iPhone battery... ah, wait...
    Is the gorilla tired yet?
  • i rode it last year and ran strava app on my iphone. i did it in approx 5:45 and i seem to remember having about 35% battery left. in any case, plenty of spare. I ran the app on the etape this year, did it in approx 8:30 and still had a smidge of battery left at the end.

hope that helps. Iphone 5S for what its worth.

    I've withdrawn from the event.

It is too risky for me. As a cat 2 racer, I'm prepared to crash racing, not in a charity sportive. If the weather is as bad as they say, the probability of a crash is almost guaranteed. It's not the weather, it's the actions of others.

Last year’s event was dodgy enough at times when I rode it in the dry, near the front. Inexperienced and overeager riders in a large pack on wet roads is a no-no..

    Good luck fellas.

I was wondering the same thing, but opted for putting it on my actual jersey, rather than my jacket. There are frame and helmet numbers, so identification would be OK and they could easily get to the back of my body number in an emergency.

Don't know what the official line is though ....

Same for me on number, it's on the jersey not the gillet. At least when the tropical sunshine hits and I remove the gillet you can still see my number

Thanks for the info. Guess I will just have to remember to check it part way round. Mainly want to record the hills anyway
