Not a good idea in my opinion. It was the one race of the year that any type of rider could genuinely win, and in a variety of different way. Probably not anymore. But we shall see.

  • See how it goes, i think it has been too much of a sprinters race in recent times.

In the six editions since they put in La Manie, four times the finish has been contested by fewer than 10 riders. Even in 2009 there were only 34.

Hmm, I think there are better ways to get Nibali a victory personally...

Does he not get a down grade for chasing down Tony Martin's solo break?

    As did this year
  • Don't like it at all.

La Manie was doing the business just fine.
Made the first selection and caused considerable damage on a couple of occasions.

Now the break will get closed down later, so nothing much will happen until close to km 260.

It's in the initial post. The first picture is 2014, the second 2013.

Sorry. I mean the route they ended up riding...

I can't quite remember what the changes were....

According to reports on the day they missed out 117km-213km - the foot of Turchino to the end of the descent of La Manie.

Would have been better to bring the finish back to the Via Roma and leave the rest alone

There was absolutely nothing normal in this years edition.

It's only fair to say this is all favouring Sagan.

The change is no surprise. A couple of years ago the organisers indicated they’d alter the route for 2014, with the idea of increasing the chances of a break succeeding. At the time, the Technical Manager, Mauro Vegni, said ”We’re looking to see how we can make the race more open and higher the number of potential winners”.

But I think the organisers want to get back to the days when the winner was someone with the cycling stature of a Bartali or Merckx, or a classic specialist like De Vlaeminck, or at least an acclaimed all-rounder like Fignon or Kelly. So not a sprinter.
They really should have tightened up the route about 15 years ago when Zabel kept winning and then Cipollini, Petacchi, and then Freire for the first time.

(Not sure, but I think the change makes the distance longer than ever before, if only by 1 km)

Change for the sake of it. There was nothing wrong with the route as it was. Not only was the list of recent winners fairly diverse but it was, in theory at least, open to a win by most types of rider.

Wasn't open to an Italian win, hence the change.

    I agree.
It has become a Sprinters delight since they moved it further along the "Flat" roads.

See how it goes, too often in recent years the race hasn't really taken off (for the spectator) until the Poggio and whilst it normally guarantees a thrilling finale it never quite reaches the heights most classics at their best can.

Hardly a sprinters' delight. Can remember only one bunch sprint in the past 5 years.

Alot of sprinters have still won though. 4 out of the last 5.

    Gerrans a sprinter...does not compute...

OK, I would say that Cavendish, Friere, Goss and Ciolek are sprinters.

Always the same story, "Cant have sprinters winning a one day race, change the route" Why? It is not a pan flat route, so If a sprinter can tough it out over the lumpy bits and win without a lead out, why not?

When was the last time someone called for a route to be changed because hard men or climbers were winning it 4 times out of 5?
