Hopefully a sign of the future with the best cycling commentator covering a major pro race on the BBC. So far so good with no dumbing down for the masses.

It's amazing how much more relaxed I am listening to Brotherton. No stress.
  • Yes, it's bliss. Even tone, no insane jabbering.
26kms covered in the first half hour.

They've just done a bit with Matt Dawson who's just finished the sportive ride. He'd ridden it for a bowel cancer charity "for my Mum" and got a bit teary talking about his experience of the ride and his Mum. They cut back to the main commentary and Rob Hayles immediately said "has he put on a bit of timber? No wonder he's emotional about making it over the hills!" :D

    Carlton's on at 2.30pm!
  • On another note, the onscreen graphics (distance to go! lead group's time!) remind me of Sporza's. Any idea who the coverage is being done by? Is it the Beeb or another company?

I'm glad they put an elite race in alongside the sportive and I know it's in the first year, but this really is sub-chipper isn't it? Even the Tour of Britain would be ashamed of this start list!
  • Freeview 303 red button HD, before it returns to BBC 1 about 4

    :D
All the gear, but no idea...

More WT & PC teams than last year's ToB I think.

The difficulty in getting a field comes in the time of year, this is flat Spring Classics territory yet the race is in August, a fortnight or so after the best sprinters wind down after the Tour.

It is a shame though that BMC and Omega Pharma Quickstep didn't come along considering they have 2 Brits each that are suited to this kind of race. But Tour of Denmark is a more established, competing event.

Is there a profile of the route anywhere? Couldn't find one on the official site, or is it so flat that nobody has even bothered? I've always felt the UK could have an interesting one day race in the South-West, the home counties are just a little dull.

Hayles describing the result of the Olympic road race as a travesty. Good on him!

Brotherton brings home to you just how annoying Carlton is.

After his dumping by the Beeb last year, ITV4 brought him in to cover the Tour Series and British Championships.

Carlton is now on Eurosport though.

Doing Leith Hill aren't they? Short and sharp but not too challenging for these riders. Would be OK if not for the run back to London as the narrow hill would have resulted in a good battle for position if close to the finish.

Maybe so, but I think there are fewer big names (as in riders rather than teams) than the ToB usually attracts (although I get that it's a completely different sort of race and the ToB is often a useful warm up for the Worlds).

This may sound like a stupid question, but will the elite riders end up on the same roads as the slower casual riders? If so could make for some interesting passing manoeuvres

Was good to see new Welsh champ Jon Mould taking the first sprint. Shame he doesn't get to wear a Champs jersey.

Yeah, but as I said (acknowledging that,) getting a decent field of sprinters and classics riders is a bit difficult in August. Sky's Classics team is basically in attendance minus EBH and GT who I assume are both still recovering from tour / injured. And Stannard, also I guess in Tour recovery.

At ToB 2012, there was Basso and Sammy Sanchez but I don't recall any other big names outside of Sky. Garmin had a few stagiaires in their team. The only other big names (iirc) were the likes of Cav and Wiggo in the Sky line-up.

It was all going so well until Hugh turned up. Now it's all about Sky and how 5 minutes is a dangerous lead.....with 140km still to go!

Quick pic I snapped of Sagan and co going through Richmond Park earlier. I was pleased that they didn't ride up that hill quite as quickly as I'd expted.
