Someone joins a forum, Months later, he announces that he has surreptitiously obtained other members IP addresses and tracked them over the internet. He then posts details of sites they visited. What could possibly be weird about that?

Your making far too much of this, having an IP logger open is not as complex or crazy as your making out, anyway, im off to Africa, laters ;)

Sounds a terrible drag, may be one day you may be successful enough not to have leave your house to earn money.

I could say that maybe one day you will be successful enough to have people wanting to fly you around the world to do a job but surely that would be dropping to your level ? :)

Nothing wrong about IP logging as this is not covered by the data protection act as the 'address' is a machine not a person, it only becomes a privacy issue when you have the IP and combine it with private personal information like say for example someone's browsing history, it then becomes illegal when you publish this information on an open forum as this is libelous.

If this is done with the full knowledge of the website owners they too are implicated (as are the moderators who have allowed this) in this crime as they then have your IP, your full name and your email address and now your browsing history. This is illegal in parts of Europe, Germany for example, but it is a court matter in other EU countries.

Do not publish other people's private information on an open forum.

Your quite wrong. For many reasons.
Logging IP addresses as you say is not illegal as its a machine but where did you get logging browsing history?
That would be hacking and my computing skills do not reach that far.
Having open access to an IP and where that IP sits which is what has been described here is not illegal. Please do not try and make something out of this for your fellow followers, it will inevitably make you look like a Rodney.

    When you said...

"Ironically, one of the people who was mocking me on one of my early post about cars was filling out online payday loan applications at the same time as having a pop at me. Another who was arguing about what I thought was indecent pictures of a young movie star was on the website adultwork.com so to me its horses for courses."

...you didn't access their browsing history to know this?

I thought, like others, that this meant you used the IP to check where else this IP was logged onto to see where others were browsing, sorry if I misunderstood how you obtained this personal information before publishing it on an open forum.

When questioned about the Dillon out of forms I did say it was a statement that I made up as I didnt k ow if anone was filling out a form, just that a certain IP was on these sites.
I have zero interest in others people's finances and wether or not they are taking loans or lookin for hookers. My point is that certain people shouldn't mock others when they lead such shady existences themself.

I certainly wouldn't look for hookers as I'm married. I also wouldn't look for loans when I've just bought a new bike.
Hen again, morally I would like to think that I do the right thing.

Sorry V, I can't see how invading people's privacy and publishing the results on a public forum, is morally the right thing to do?

I was hoping you were just joking and it was a wind up.

I was not questioning your morals as these are your personal beliefs and as such only you will decide if you are right, I was questioning your (societal) ethics.

So you didn't obtain personal information about other forum users browsing for hookers and loans then publish your findings on an open forum (cake stop).

glad we cleared that up

A man felt he was wronged so sought to put this right by doing something he thought everyone else would agree was right, he was wrong, not wanting to be wrong he tried to put it right by claiming he was more right than others which only showed how wrong he was.

    Do keep up :D

Yeah but that wasn't really an invasion of privacy, that was to find out where a tw@t lived so you could stab them with a bayonet while they slept. Acceptable in my book :D

Your mistaken, I do things that I feel right, nothing to do with making or wanting others to agree.
I am more than happy to go it my own rather than gimping in like so many others. I couldn't imagine loving my life following the pack, how boring would that be ?!?
I get it wrong nearly as much as I get it right but it's far more rewarding being right them few times than having never tried.

Then why make stuff up, then repeatedly defend it when you're called out ?
Just a question, not a dig.

It's not as easy as that because as we know from past responses, no matter the answer you will respond the same way and fudge use that answer as a question for a later date thereby extending your game.

It's precisely as easy as that; for example there was the bike lock / nitrogen tablets thread where you got it wrong about being able to easily obtain 'liquid nitrogen tablets', then came up with a load of rubbish to defend your position.

    Or the example in this thread ;

I have no intention of twisting, or fudging the answer, I'm just interested in why you make stuff up ?
