I'll kick this off now and probably be the only one interested.

Apparently the organisers were over here last week and met with Coleraine Borough Council. God I hope they bring a stage to the North Coast.

RCS Sport, the organiser of the Giro d'Italia has announced that the 2014 edition of the race will end in Trieste, in the extreme north-east of Italy, with a finish on Monte Zoncolan on the final Saturday expected to decide the final overall winner on the penultimate stage.

RCS Sport announced the Trieste finish at a press conference in Trieste and coincides with the 60th anniversary of the city returning under Italian control after the second world war.

    --

The Oropa stage on May 24, the weekend before the Giro d’Italia finishes in Trieste, should honor the 10th anniversary of Marco Pantani’s death.

They're planning to run the exact stage that got cancelled last year over the Gavia and Stelvio. Hope the weather's a bit better...

And I'm not sure about 'honouring' Pantani either, seeing as all the things he was loved for were due to PEDs. Have a memorial yes, but not honour him with a Giro stage, especially considering what happened in 1999.
It's only a bit of sport, Mun. Relax and enjoy the racing.

Thanks for the info folks. At least an "exciting" TT stage can include a nice bottle of Barolo without too much guilt.
  • Looks some good stages in that route. Excited about NI stages too.

Hopefully weather will be better for Ponte Legno-Val Martello stage. It is a week later next year. We were there this year for last 5 days and we did still drive upto Val Martello. It was still passable certainly as far as the dam as we ran up past all the TV crews and parties of locals still enjoying themselves. Its a beautiful dead end pass road. Should make a stunning stage.

Need to decide if I can afford to go out again?

    From BBC report

"Sinn Féin has said it is disappointed that the race circuit ignores west Belfast."

Aye because that's how you want to promote your city / country to a world wide audience of tourists.

Imagine if the peleton did attempt to go up Woodvale Rd?

Maybe that's why Alonso's attempt to buy Euskatel failed, because they didn't want the carrots going where most Orangemen can't.

Will Cav be allowed to wear his National Champs jersey, or is he only allowed to wear it on certain days?

    Ferry booked, can't wait.

    May 14, stage 5: Taranto-Viggiano

Fantastic - used to visit Viggiano for work over the last few years - great wee hilltop village, with long drag up to the top. Great scenery around about.

Not so fantastic - weekend of the Etape Caledonia

    :D

Glad to hear we weren't the only ones who did this, we turned around at the lake too. As long as the weather holds this will be a brilliant stage, so glad they're including it next year.
  • Might as well stick this here. Acquarone sidelined by the RCS, as they investigate their lost Euro millions.

    Quite a balanced Grand Tour.

Glad to see Monte Zoncolan making an appearance. Some say it's one of the hardest, if not the hardest climb in Italy - should make an interesting end to the Giro.

Stage 16 is gonna hurt though

Not one single hilly/semi classic-ish stage. Not one stage descending to the finish line either (stage 10 does but even 2013 edition of Wiggo would ride that down with a grin on his face...)

Why does it have to be either or? Flat or massive mountain finishes?

Stage 7 meets what you want, doesn’t it? Stage 17 too.

Think you mean stage 11, not 10, but what’s wrong with it? You want a steeper run-in to the finish?

The hill finishes during the first week are hardly mountain finishes.

Yes, We have decided to make our annual European trip a visit to Northern Ireland to watch the Giro. (Well, Its really Italy for that weekend, isnt it?)

Taking the bikes and will probably try to follow the stage 2 route one day and then cycle down to Armagh to watch the start of Stage 3. Looking forward to it.

Any good suggestions on where we should base ourselves? Is it easiest to go to central Belfast?
