NO NEED being the key words! It's not needed, simple as.
And I don't dislike the ups, I just see no point in pushing myself up them. I'm fit enough and I go up only to come back down.0 -

Or uplifted Downhill (Freeride to Yeehaa)0

Motorcross is frowned upon where I live these days and it would wreck the awesome trails built my MTBers so that's not an option.
Only get an uplift service when ride with one of the boys who has a key for the green gates, unfortunately. And by doing that all the time would lose all my fitness, I like some sort of fitness just not more than I need.0 -

Me. I prefer to do other things, which going uphills faster and faster are counterproductive to. We've had this conversation before. I like to train weights, I don't want to be a 9 stone racing snake. I simply want to get to the top of a hill so I can ride down it, down a steep technical route preferably. I can ride up pretty much any hill I need to therefore I am fit enough and don't want to be any fitter. I have a level of fitness which is healthy enough and I eat well for good health. I prefer HIIT cardio to steady state as it fits in better with resistance weight training. Simple as that really.
My goals are different in the winter to the summer. Winter time I spend less time in the gym and more on the MTB, that's when I choose to increase my fitness levels. No intention of increasing my fitness levels over the summer. Reason being over the summer I want to be putting on lean muscle for the beach :-) Over the winter I focus more on my fitness.0 -

Let's take Gee Atherton. I can guarantee with some certainty that he is not only faster than you up and down a hill, but that he's also stronger, and lighter than you.0 -

Faster and lighter yes, stronger, your'e having a laugh!
Like I said, I want to put weight ON! I don't want to be as light as Gee Atherton!0 -

Are you just acting thick now or are you indeed very thick? I LIKE TO WEIGHT TRAIN! Why do people train weights, well some of us do it to lift heavier weights which means muscles getting bigger which means... PUTTING WEIGHT ON! Not a hard one to grasp is it?
Through the winter the gym takes a hit and I go at maintenance and my cardiovascular fitness improves from riding the bike. Through the summer my aim is to put weight on (preferably muscle mass) but inevitably some fat. So I'm going to get slower uphills. Doesn't bother me. In addition to that, going up a hill easy burns less calories. Considering over the summer I'm eating 2700-3000 calories per day, throw in a bike ride where I've gone like the clappers up a hill I'll need to be consuming more like 5000. Makes it more difficult to do. So instead I turn an easy gear and go slow as hell up hills to burn less cals, conserve energy making my GOAL for the summer months easier. Might change it up next year and keep putting weight on all winter then go like mad fitness wise over the summer to lose the weight and excess fat. But the stage I'm at, at the moment I'm still putting weight on. Not to mention when the time does come to lose 1/2 a stone it makes riding so much easier too.0 -

See, the reason I ask, is because I grew up with an older brother who was a competitive weightlifter, who not only broke a few records in his time, but also placed second in the European championships. He was not built like a tank, he was just under 11 stone, and about 5'8", but managed to clean and jerk easily more than twice his bodyweight. He also competed regionally in cross country running, cycling, and a couple of obscure martial arts.
He was lighter than you, and, again with some certainty, I can say, stronger than you. Probably far, far stronger.
He wasn't heavy, he was my brother. ( )
So, WHY are you putting weight on? That can't possibly be the end goal you're looking for, unless you're some kind of roid-rage pumped amuuricahn wrestler, or maybe you're trying to get some disability benefits, like that episode of South Park where Cartman decides to get REALLY obese so he can have a mobility scooter.0 -

I do it for aesthetics, I don't want to look 11 stone so I had to put weight on. Not that hard to work out. What is the point in going to the gym and staying the same size?! There isn't if doing weights purely for aesthetics so I have to put weight on. In order to body build you eat excess calories in order to gain weight then you reduce your calorie intake to strip the fat and keep the majority of the muscle mass, for the desired look.0 -

I thought body building/getting hench was just a case of eating a fark load of protein and eyeing yourself up in the mirror? That's what I see all the meatheads do anyway0
-
The easiest way to do it is to be in calorie surplus. It means a bit of fat gained but it's easy enough to strip it away afterwards. It's much harder doing it by just eating a lot of protein. You need the carbs to shift heavy weights. You need fats for any number of things.
Lads, thanks and all that but I'll get my diet and bodybuilding advice from the Menshealth forums okay, not from some dickheads on here that think they know everything, never lifted a weight in their life and live through stories of their brothers... But thanks anyway.0 -

It's nothing like the magazine on the forums. Head over... take a look! Mainly the 'Eating Right' section I use, awesome advice on how to eat for your goals and how to eat healthy in general. Just like this forum is great for bike advice that place is great for health advice.0 -
If their advice is like some on here (and it would seem that way from some of the things you've written) then I'll give you a couple of years tops.0

Couple of years tops for what?
And Chunkers all I've noticed you saying is something is wrong! Not why it is wrong?! You say 'if' there advice is like some on here. Why not go have a read and see for yourself instead of just assuming it's all wrong when you've not even bothered to go and have a look. That's the trouble with these internet forums, everyone is a know-it-all warrior!0 -

Does muscle weigh anything?! Yes! So to increase muscle size you HAVE to put on weight! Not rocket science is it ffs!0 -
We're very aware of that.
You are saying eat calories, which come in a gazillion number of forms. It really has nothing to do with calories, they are the by product of the food groups.0 -
Just squirt yourself full of steroids then - sorted!
Just don't enter any comps......Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0 -

They're interrelated. What matters most, petrol in your car or air in your tyres?!
I make sure I hit my protein and fat minimums then make sure I'm in a calorie surplus of about 500cals per day. Those 500cals come from whatever macronutirent group I fancy.
What I mean is if you just count cals and eat a healthy diet as long as in a calorie surplus you'll get bigger. Watching the macros is more for fine tuning body composition which is not what I am doing at the moment.0 -
The goal of increasing muscle mass, is as hollow, shallow and vain as liposuction, facelifts, boob jobs, or ab implants. It's just pathetic.
I reckon you need to see a psych, to overcome your self image issues.0
