What constitutes a "tough" sport?

    Someone will inevitably turn up and say football (FA) is for poofs.

    That person has never played football (FA) at a decent level. I just thought I'd get that in there (maybe I'm too late, I haven't read the rest of the thread).

    Very good point, no other sport has such a high chance of a conviction for raping a scrag picked up in a regional night club.

    Interesting article on the beeb recently about the number of criminal conviction for NFL players, however it made no link to Roids being pretty prolific and the chance of a bit of roid rage being the reason a 6' 8" machine rips some guys head open in abar.
    If I know you, and I like you, you can borrow my bike box for £30 a week. PM for details.

    I'm sorry I can't find the clip. I think it was Bob Monkhouse hosting Family Fortunes who asked a contestant to name a dangerous race.

    Before someone yells 'Racist', I am just posting what I found to be an unexpected answer. Make your own minds up on its validity.

    The link is to a list of other stupid answers.

    Sorry to continue the 'off topic', but it reminded me of this one on local radio quiz some years back.

    Q: What is the capital of Belgium?
    A: Erm, oh erm, oh erm.......
    Q:I'll give you a clue, it begins with 'B'.
    A: BIRMINGHAM!
    Q: ah, no. Birmingham isn't a capital, and anyway it's in Britain isn't it? Think of a vegetable....
    A: ONION!

  • How about offshore yacht racing, fairly standard weekend of it just done, came back with just the usual selection of bumps and bruises (my left knee is a rather spectacular yellow and purple colour) you get doing foredeck in force 5/6/7 winds! Only a couple of moments that could have easily ended in something way more serious if we'd got it a bit wrong, one of which would have wrecked the yacht on some rocks in a big sea. Or then again polo? The insurance that covers me for the yacht racing draws the line at polo!

    I reckon this list is defining tough in relation to the damage/pain inflicted on the body.

    Rodeo, Rugby and Gymnastics should be further up the list.

    Cycling wouldn't make the top 10. Maybe the RAAM style events. But no.

    Horse Racing (National Hunt) should be on that list too.

    Caving.

    I've yet to come back from a trip not covered in bruises and wondering how much I'd get for my kit on eBay.

    Never mind the risk of drowning.

    No. Sad past time for blokes with grey beards, glasses that go dark in the sun by themselves and craggy wives with grey hair scraggly hair. And generally pretty boring. Pull the rope Tarquin, hoist the mainsail, spinnaker ahoy! Look, look: 4.8 knots over land! Huzzah!

    Then to the bar at the members only yacht club for wine and leering at the barmaid.

    Feeestyle MX for brilliantly painful injuries?

    No chance...been a professional yacht skipper for over ten years, it isn't tough, sure it has its moments, but mostly the worst times are dealing with yachty feckwits that know jack sh1t about sailing. Thank god Cowes Week is nearly over.

    Depends on what you mean by "off-shore". If you mean ducking out through the heads for a three hour club race then no. But if you're doing the Sydney-Hobart type of thing than yes.

    Round the world solo racing or mini transat maybe, but even events such as Sydney/Hobart, Fastnet, RORC600 etc are normally only tough because dickhead skippers cannot decide when crew/boat/weather are the right combination to deliver a safe race. Many accidents are caused due to dumb ass decision making, which in my opinion does not constitute being tough. Crossing The Solent on a flat calm for some knobheads will be a tough day and they will be the ones in the bar later wearing a t-shirt saying, better a bad day on the water than a good day at the office, these types should be avoided at all costs.

    I think a list list that long that doesn't include F1 is probably not worth taking seriously. A lot of the sports listed could be managed recreationally by an amateur of fairly average fitness. I can't see the average person surviving many laps in F1 nor can I see the average person handling a Grand Tour over three weeks at any pace.

    But there are lots of ways you can define 'tough'.

    You could go on;
    Strength
    Endurance
    Courage

    Or;

    Number of deaths
    Serious injuries
    Blood spilt
