Why do some rally cars (generally german and dutch I'm finding) have orange lights and sometimes a siren?
ie?

I thought it might be to do with safety cars but it doesn't seem that way...
Just interested.

Hmm...never seen that before, is very strange.
Gotta love rally though, the sound the cars make is incredible!! Million times better than F1 cars. And ive always had a soft spot for all the Ford rally cars. I love them. Especially the Ford Escort Mexico....corr thats a sexy car.
Heres a picture of the engine i took last year at a car show.

Apparently my dads mate had a Mexico (dont know if it was a MK1 or not) and they used to save up pocket money and blow it all on petrol, and take it down to the field and slide it around. Must have been so much fun, cant do that these days.
My dads got a Reanault 5 Gordini Turbo but he doesnt drive it. Its covered up in a warehouse at his work Apparently Renault 5s were beasts at rally back in the day before i was around.
This isnt his actual one, dont have a photo of it. But this is exactly what it looks like.
Hes told me a few stories about raping BMWs at the lights and stuff. Never heard it running unfortunately.

Thats one massive belt! Forgive me if im wrong, but is that a supercharger belt?0 -
Just looking at it again, i think my previous question about it being a supercharger belt is quite stupid. I havent seen a supercharger belt like that before.0
-
As nick said, car zero (generally) as course car.
On the subject of engines, not the best pic but0 -
what car is that? That too looks like a Renault 5 but the Maxi Turbo version. V6 aswell if im not wrong. Lovely!0

You're wrong... But I'll see if you can guess. Certain Nick will get it straight away.
Btw, which belt are you on about in Nicks photo?0 -
Damn...Peugeot would be next best guess, i dont know what model though, never been that good with Peugeots.
The black belt to the left with the red borders on it.0 -

I just realised thats not a belt.... I was wondering why a belt would be there. LOL
Metro?! Never would have guessed that in a million years. I made my guesses by looking at the widened body kit at the back and the sort of angle the rear of the car comes down at. Both make it look kinda like a Renault 5 or a Peugeot.
So how many cylinders does that engine have?0 -

Nope, i stupidly thought that black belt looking thing with the red borders on it was a belt?!?!?! :oops:0 -

The black belt to the left with the red borders on it.
That's not a belt. It's an air filter if I'm not mistaken.
Ben + squarepants, you're correct. Chuffing love those cars. Says a lot about them that they can still compete with today's wrc cars.0 -

An old mate of mine had two Renault 5GT Turbos (second one was one of the limited edition Raiders) when we were youngsters (20 years ago) - proper little pocket rockets. Weigh as much as a crisp packet (actually I think the body panels were made form old crisp packets, they were so thin, lol) and went like fuck. You don't ever want to have to pay for a new clutch on one of those though.
The 205 looks like a Dimma, but with a Gutmann grille?0 -
I just love Renault 5s, things of beauty!! And a 205 gti happens to be my favourite peugeot. So damn beautiful. Theres one neglected in some guys drive way and i stare at it on the way to the park every day. Wont ever got bored of it. My mates all think its an ugly banger and a box car. But they do not understand... Its the rims and the red trim on them that does it for me, but the whole thing looks sexy.0

i know where there is a R5 Gordini"Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Nice, is it in good nick?
And since you seem to know about your rally cars, is it true that they used to use the Renault 5 Gordini engines in Formula 1 but tuned and modified them?0 -
This thread shows why classic rallying is so popular - cant beat the old 60s and 70s cars flying through the stages. Often rebuilt to a much better spec (within the regs)
Sat here looking at a pic of me co-driving an e-type on a rally in Corsica0 -
go to any night event / stage event in Wales (and other places in the UK I'm sure) and the Mk1/2 escort is still the car of choice for most of the top boys and youngsters too. It's not the best platform; based on 1960s technology and costs a lot to sort with an atlas / 4 link etc but they're iconic and hold such a presence at events.
Nothing has come along to replace them other than e30/36 BMs, the Corolla and (in about 10 years to filter down!) the gt86/BRZ will probably make an appearance, if road rallying is still around.
anyway - what are these, might test a few
