Nod,wave or hello?

  • Generally a hi from me, if I'm riding hard then the hands might not come off the bars but a nod too, if I'm free to do so I tend wave my hand. Don't really care what the other person is riding I try to be polite to all users really only exception would be after a handle bar chewing climb in which case a wave of the hand might be all the energy I can spare.

    This.

It has been a couple of days since we last discussed this, I suppose...
  • Differs as to how we pass.

Opposite side if the road, polite nod.
Me passing on same side, chirpy hello, not sounding in the slightest like I'm making effort.
    Me being passed, grunt. :)

    Ignore everyone :P

That way, no one is dissapointed
  • Hello,

I use a combination of all three. A nod or wave is good for when there are cars, and/or I'm suffering from a hill or from going flat-out. I try to say hello if can, and often end up chatting for a bit about routes, bikes etc. :) I don't mind, however, if the other person ignores my wave or nod, they have their own agenda and that's fair enough. Every now and then I get annoyed by those on 'superbikes' who ignore me, mainly because I think they're being snobs, but I'm sure its not the case all of the time. Trouble is, where I live in a city I can't be arsed to wave/nod/say hello to all those on their commute.

    Bye.

Passed a guy this afternoon, I gave a small wave as I overtook and went on at my pace. He suddenly sped up a clung to my wheel for the next 2 miles into a strong headwind then overtook me - not a peep or acknowledgement from him. I let him go then caught at a junction. I said hello and just blanked me. What rude twit !

When I am out on the road bike or MTb I always say hello unless undertaking a move or safety does not allow it.

I even give a smile and a wave to the motorist that punched me off my bike... I'm sure it really annoys him!

I always say hello if I'm overtaking someone (which is rare). Cyclists on the other side of the road, get a proper wave or I'm knackered/dead (which isn't rare) I'll do a half arsed wave or nod.
Was out in Belmont this evening and had a brief chat and cycle with cool people, it was a nice change as 99.9% of my cycling is solo. Some nice Bianchis and got completely slaughtered by one on a cat 4 climb

This was quite interesting untill i quickly got to
Mountain bikers i leave alone, don't know if that is elitist or not but i just past them, unless of course they nod back but they never do so i ignore them.

This is a problem, In life.. As a bike rider

What if you pass a guy on a mtb that rides a road bike also at other times?

Why would you feel 'Elitist' or possibly above anyone on a mountain bike? That is idiotic indeed and is probably one of the reasons guys on mtb's who dont ride a road bike say what they do

Personally ive given up giving people a nod whilst passing as tbh most of the time you get ignored so why worry. Just carry on with no drama and dont end up in a hedge.. Seems a pretty good outcome

Haven't seen this one for a while.......

I nod or wave to everyone when I'm out of town, why not say hello to someone else whose enjoying a similar pursuit or the countryside ? If they don't want to return the courtesy, fair enough, I don't mind either way, but I don't get wound up about it.

I only wave at green cars :D

Oh and being colour blind I also wave at blue ones, yellow ones, brown ones and grey ones, I think.

Everyone here says hello to everyone else, its considered normal to acknowledge the presence of another human being.

  • I got blanked yesterday by a Sky #FullKitWanker LOL

As I passed I shouted 'Y U has knees pointing outwards'
I'm sorry you don't believe in miracles
  • I nod well in advance and if he nods back then I know he's up for a game of chicken.

As I discovered riding Box Hill and the surrey hills for the first time at the weekend, don't bother because no one else did it back to me or initiated it. Everywhere else in the country everyone is really friendly and I have a nod or a nice chat passing people or being passed myself (usually the later).

Is there a reason for Box Hill and the surrey hills being different???

Chap on road bike - nod/hi/one finger lifted off bars
Chap on TT bike – ignore
    Chap on MTB – ignore

I suppose the reason i leave the mountain bikers alone is of where i live.I live in a good area but some some reason we get the chavies on mountain bikes because i live near a nature park and there are always yobs on bikes there. You know the ones i mean, the ones who are looking to nick something at the nearest opportunity.

So,i suppose that's where i get the no nod approach to them from.

I always make an effort to let on to all cyclist old enough to have moved on from a bmx.
But I find I don't have the social skills to know what to do should I meet them again at a set of lights/junction
I live in fear that they may offer to ride with me for a few miles as they're "going that way" and force me to ride at a reasonable pace while maintaining the ability to "chat"
I find that pretending to be from a none specific Eastern European country can help in this situation

I ride a hybrid and I don't wear lycra. I love it when proper roadies nod or say something, so please do acknowledge me and don't just stick to your own kind. :D

I have always wanted to nod at least but sometimes I cant tell whether the other rider will return it so I dont bother, but now I will at least give a nod and a little smile. My eyes will be covered so I dont even need to look at them just in their direction and not bother with if they return the gesture.

If I don't get strong eye contact and a confident 'HI' from a random stranger just out trying to enjoy riding his/her bike, I like to carry a small tub of Welsh cakes with me so I can throw them at them.

Almost on par with racism the whole non wave thing

I once accidentally said hello to a motorcyclist - it was the end of a long ride and I got a bit confused. Fair play to him though, he said hello back.

That post made me laugh,a bicycle and a motorbike, confusing.

The same old threads pop up repeatedly on this forum
  • I usually flick the V sign as the rider approaches. Once they pass by, i either shout 'splitter !' at the top of my voice or throw my water bottle at them.

I always nod. most don't and there are some that actually blank you!
  • Why do people care whether they get a nod, a wave or a "hello" back? You don't know the person - no need to get arsey about it. Maybe they're in a bad mood? Maybe they're deaf?

I find it a bit rude to blank people that's all. And rudeness of any sort annoys me.

I'd like to think that someone riding on a public road is sufficiently aware of their surroundings to realise I'm here, so when blanked i always assume they are rude rather than dangerous lol

Oh and as a MTB/Roadie i wave at everyone irrespective of what bike i'm on.

Yeah but the person blanking you might be in an understandably piss poor mood. Maybe his wife has just died. Or he's just lost his job. You don't know. Assuming rudeness like that and letting that annoy you will drive you mad. You shouldn't let it bother you.
  • I always say hi to everyone, and usually ask little kids on scooters if they want a race. They always say no.
If I'm overtaking a cyclist (not just geezers on bikes) on my commute home from work I'll often start chatting to find out which way they're going, then end up sharing the journey if we're going the same way. This usually goes one of two ways - a) it's a social thing, and we chat most of the way back, or b) we hammer it, taking turns on the front and end up getting home 10 minutes quicker.
It certainly breaks the monotony of a regular commute and you can meet some nice people.
    Try it!
