You can be sure that the pace was very high. It is impossible to believe that even one rider wouldn't try it. The ES commentators even said several times the pace was too high for attacks. The overheads show a long line of riders after the initial bunch. Kiriyenka is insanely strong and the climb was only 5km so he was enough to force the pace and deter attacks.

He had the peloton strung out but it was when Movistar hit the front and noticeably upped the pace that riders really started to tail off. I couldn't figure out what they were trying to achieve with that, Were they simply trying to make a point?

I would disagree re Movistar pace. What they were trying to achieve I have no idea. Maybe they were just trying to place Quintana although it did cross my mind about trying to make a point.

Barguil only down 19 secs and JTl, Pinot and Elissonde only down 21 secs which is good to see. Dombrowski 4mins down though. Bardet down 5mins. Sagan's brother 3rd from last.

Boswell's out with a crook knee, and Edmondson came down sick just before the race.

Ooh, Barguil is riding. Thanks FF, I hadn't realised. It is only a year ago I was watching him race on my local roads in the Circuit Du Morbihan. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rRcTFUxturg Now that's a proper one day race.

Nearing final summit of Stage 1 highlights. Another chance to snag Alberto's maniacal descent (and GIF if up please).

For somebody whose never won a race, he's pretty good value for the sponsors.

Gritty documentary heli-coverage of peloton having "naturals". Watch for it on the highlights package.
Followed immediately by moto close-ups of roadspray a very creditable distance above head height.

    Txurruka with 3:40 & 50km.

Gerrans was riding? Oh you little snake. Enjoy your win you ball-less chipmunk.

    Bit harsh, no?

Green edge on the front but hardly pushing the pace & uncle Jens having a good old gas with everyone

Gerrans showed a canny nose being ahead of the crash at summit and it was his man Weening with the initially suicidal descent pace. Did his job to absolute perfection.

Meanwhile there's some candid Harmon Smith gossip about JTL, Alberto (admiringly taking no prisoners chaingate etc), Schlecks (not always a quiet drink). Hope they don't notice the open mic for a while.

Jens off the front, looking as always like he could ride the wheels off the bike. Have to say this road is looking a bit patchy right now

Crash in the peloton but doesn't seem to be anyone out just a quick chase back on

It was Impey not Matthews. Did Contador lose time?

Didn't see any Saxo in the front bunch but my feed quality is not great so he could have been there.

Not sure on where Bert came TBH the live feed was not great through that final little flick in the last 750M

Recent Worlds U 23 have given us Coquard, Demare, Degenkolb and...........Matthews.
    Spot the odd bod out.

What is his role at OGE this year? Why is he in this race, if not for today?
    I am bemused.

Not sure on where Bert came

61st with same time as the Impey according to the official site.

Edit: 85 riders in the bunch given the same time as the winner which is surprising to me. It didn't look that many.
