    HEAVYWEIGHT. This guy is golden.

5hrs in the saddle and he takes a classic race, after riding some time on the front. Legs packed full of talent and a heart full of panache.

Underwhelming finish I thought. Camera work didnt help and the ES commentators have no excitement in their voices.

So Moser's the real deal then. Pretty impressive stuff.

Belkov in 10th - excellent finish having been out the front most of the day.

A couple of specialists on such a steep finish ramp surprisingly far down that group: Valv., Cunego, Iglinsky

That'll learn them to mark Sagan and Cancellara all day. Super-smart by Cannondale, sending someone up the road who could actually win unlike OPQS last week. 'nother Nocentini podium :)

It's a strange one isn't it. Looking at the list of winners it seems that both the heavier and lighter puncheurs can win. In theory you'd expect your Valv.'s and Cunego's to fly away on that last ascent. Not so, and nice to see those two types of rider pitted against each other.

Whether it's the parcours or that the heavier guys are further along with their condition with the cobbles coming so soon, who knows?
  • A good start to the season. It is a bit early in the year for some of the supposed favourites. Looking at the wins Cunego seems to thrive at the end of the season, but perhaps he's not as competitve as a few years ago anyway. Ditto Valverde.

It only got really exciting about the time Eurosport started transmitting it, but I think it was good to see the long build up beforehand to get a better sense of how dramatic the telescoping of the groups was in the last 25 kms.

Great ride by Moser. I though only Vos won races in that manner nowadays.

Not ditto Valverde. Have you any idea how many wins he has had this year let alone since he has come back. He was also 2nd at the one day Murcia race which was a steep finish like this one.

Most of all a very clever win by Moser. His last 20 kms were very strong, but the moment he attacked was perfect: just after a big push by a very strong Cancellara, which meant that chinny himself couldn't immediately react, but everyone else (mostly Astana working for Iglinsky) looked at Cancellara to do the dirty work. When Astana did react it was too late.

ES commentators have no excitement in their voices.

Annoyed me how they tried to call it outright. Saying Moser had blown it and it was going to be either Canc or Sagan.

This isn't a personal dig at those commentators but in general how many commentators think themselves such experts - they call things, thinking they're always right, and make it sound utterly boring as a result.

Frankly i don't care if the expert is right or wrong. I want entertainment and excitement. I want commentary not a reel of micro-predictions.

Were race radios permitted in this race?

If so, I can't help thinking that Moser was told to manage his effort and maintain just enough of a gap for the final effort in the last 700m ... Would explain the perceived lack of effort in the final few km's but yet the strong finish ...

Not a criticism btw, quite the opposite if true ... requires good communication from the car and maybe some co-operation to keep things together back in chasing bunch from Sagan but if it was a plan then chapeau ...

The 'dale kit is still duff though ... Obviously saving money on respraying the bikes ...

Yeah the kit is a big step down from the Liquigas kit. And I agree that Liquigas tactics were perfect.

I think Chinny is screwed for the classics.

Sagan just has to sit on him and he'll always take him in a sprint. And with Moser they've got 2 cards to play. Hopefully Boonen and some others can get some form to open things up a bit.

Sagan could have won that race any time he wanted.

    Great Cannondale move.

    No PTP pick for Moser.

When did ES TV coverage come in - my Sky+ recording is from 20km to go, did I miss before this?
