In on the MTB today (friday as well).

Partly for knobbly tyres, and partly because the road bike's freehub has started to refuse to engage. Turns out that it's packed full of a dense brown sludge composed of old grease, mud, rust, and fragments of ball bearing.

Took the MTB because of Brum's tendency to clear the main roads quite well while doing nothing at all to minor and/or residential roads, so the first mile or so took place at walking pace and thereafter it was normal speed, although hindered by the knobblies.

Not actually convinced the road bike wouldn't have been better, since the know wasn't icy, and the MTB was struggling in places because a 2.3 tyre wants to kind of "surf" over the top of the snow, especially where it's been cut up by traffic (it's a bit like riding in muddy 4x4 ruts) whereas a 23c tyre might have cut through it.

Was noticing similar 'surfing' behavior, got off and walked a couple of slushy sections. I can handle stirring the porridge and constantly feathering the bars to stay upright on a trip to the local trails during a muddy section but I don't really want to be doing it on a mildly downhill stretch of cycle path that hasn't been de-slushed on the way to work. Will be sticking to the roads, riding primary, drafting lorries and buses to stay out of the blizzard tomorrow.
I used to just ride my bike to work but now I find myself going out looking for bigger and bigger hills.

Rode today, the roads were fine.

The only problem I had was walking the 20 meters from my drive to the main road and then not being able to engage my spd-sl cleat due to clogging issues.

Dug it out with a key and had a drama free rest of the commute.

I was less than impressed with my new Snow Stud tyres, the front end was slopping around in the rutted slush/snow/ice mix that still covers a fair bit of my route to work.

Then I noticed that the front QR was undone
