My motivation with being on the trainer varies, but it has been used an awful lot this year. I've found it useful to break up the trainer session with some free weights. Do 20 minutes to warm up, then 30 minutes of weights, then back on the trainer for 20 minutes before having a mad minute of max cadence.
For 2013 I'm joining the local chain gang at the velodrome, who have a very specific evening routine regards gearing/speed/cadence, so the trainer will be perfect getting my condition up for that work... just means I need to move the computer to the rear wheel.0 -

Maybe worth a punt for £50 delivered, but check the companies returns policy before buying, so if it does turn out to be a crock of shoite, so you can at least get your money back. Also check for a warranty
I bought a turbo few weeks ago, and have only used it a couple of times so far, but really enjoyed it when I have. It came with a race day DVD, so following that for an hour with some spicy music on has been really motivating, and felt l;ike I'd had a good workout each time. It's a slippery slope. First you ride out in driving rain, before you know it you're wearing a silly hat and budgie smugglers with your bars down by the front spindle. By next Christmas you'll be eating moss, drinking wee, and Fell Running... for fun.0 -
Wasn't too bad... Did 25 in 75 minutes. At least on the livestrong machines you have nice pretty scenery to ride through like Niagara Falls and Yellowstone park, and music to listen to.. And a choice of three tv channels to watch if you are so inclined. A tad boring but was pushing myself quite hard as I upped the cadence from 80 to over 90 at the end... So knackered I almost fell off the bike. Nice to mix things up a bit and they also do interval training. And that spa pool is just amazing !0

If I was buying a turbo now I would recommend buying one that is compatible with trainerroad (a lot of the cheaper ones are). It gives you a really cheap way to train using 'virtual' power and also provides good training plans including winter base training. There is a long thread running in the training forum.

I have a Reebok exercise bike in the back room with a 19inch TV mounted on the wall in front of it. Set a program for 30mins (uphill then downhill and repeat) and watch Blackadder or something and the time flies by. Burn calories whilst watching TV. Beats listening to music!Graham

I like using unpadded bibs as you provide extra insulation to the upper legs and crotch with normal bib-shorts underneath (or roubaix bibshorts if its really cold), hence eliminating the need for a cucumber down the front of your tights! unless you want a nice salty snack for the cake stop of course0 -

Love these workouts, I've got 5 of them and do them in rotation over a period when then weather makes it just too dangerous to go out or if I've been working all day. Not sure what the neighbours make of the strange noises emanating from the shed though. I try and get on the Turbo at least one morning a week to do a session before breakfast to try and aid the weight loss, seems to be working. I can see the sun this morning up here in Shropshire so I'll be out on the road later, got to take the opportunity when you can!0 -

No.. but you do get Ill from going out and getting hypothermia..
There is no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothing. So MTFU, put on the right kit and get out there, no need to worry about hypothermia... although buying a turbo trainer is probably cheaper!
saying that, if it wasn't for the fact I commute, it would be far more difficult to look out the window and go ride in the rain...0 -
Why not shorten your winter rides and up the intensity? I guarantee you, being cold and wet won't be a problem.0

Just got a turbo trainer because wife was ill so couldn't get out much.
Thought I would hate it, but found out I actually don't mind it. Certainly good for when it's icy and you don't want to risk another off - I've had 3 so far this year with a total of 12 weeks off riding. Makes you a bit more cautious....
Rain I don't mind so much, but round here a lot of the roads are flooded so again the turbo trainer really helps then. Certainly better than doing nothing.
I got lucky with the Amazon warehouse bargains. Got a Cycleops fluid 2 that had damaged packaging for £160. Xmas pressie from the wife for getting enough brownie points for looking after her. Of course it's now meant I've had to buy a Gramin 500 + HR for myself so I can be really serious about pretending to train...0 -

If your goal is just to ride your bike a bit then sure go out in all weathers if that makes you happy. But if you're actually training properly then it makes way more sense when the weather's crap to do a quality session on a turbo.
I also commute by bike so I'm out every day for at least an hour no matter what the weather, but when it comes to training I only go out if the weather isn't too bad.More problems but still living....0 -
Heavy rain forecast for the next three days where I am so took a couple of hours at lunch today to do a nice 40 miler, roads a little slick but there was no rain around. Normally if it's too wet to ride I'll just go for a run. During the week I also play tennis and go in the gym. I know it's not bike specific training but variety can help in winter when you know you're just going to be frustrated waiting for a dry day or, rarest of all, a blue sky.0

I've been out a couple of times in it and found that the hand-me-down winter gear I had was so bad I'd have been better off in a mankini... had the choice between a big pile of decent winter clothing or a turbo, went for the gear as I figured I'd get more use out of it over all, plus I've only got the living room to set up the turbo in, and I've heard the room can get pretty sweaty!
Didn't think the mrs would really appreciate my sweat trickling down the freshly painted walls...0 -
315 miles this week in the wet weather...no colds or hypothermia here. Its much more fun in the rain than on the turbo.0

I put new tyres on about 4 or 5 days ago and I have had to wait until today for it to stop raining.
It isn't raining now but I can't go out today, gotta have Christmas dinner and its not likely I will be on it after that.
Then tomorrow it will probably start throwing it down again.
At least the temp is up to about 10c now and it should dry out reasonably quick, assuming it stops for long enough.0 -
Whats this about waiting for the rain to stop? I´m waiting for the blizzard to stop, snowdrifts to your waist and black ice beneath doesn´t make HTFU a real option, at least not on a road bike. I might move to the tropics. Like England.0
