Im even considering the unthinkable.................buying a turbo trainer

Im working hard to get to 75kg / 12 stones and the weather being so abominable is meaning I cant get out riding as much as id like and Im sure ive put a bit of weight back on as a result

A turbo trainer is truly a last resort as Im sure they are seismically boring to use. Rain rain , wind and more blo0dy rain to come this week .

I've done over 60 miles this week in wind and rain going to work, 50% has been in pitch black. It's mind over matter and once your going its great!

agreed. getting out for a quick 10miles at night is worth it and gives you a boost.

Did 50 miles and 3400ft this morning, no rain but was a little chilly.

I've had a trainer for ages but this winter is the first time I've really given it a fair go. It's not as boring as you think. I mix up my routines, listen to music and an hour flies by

+1 mind I have had a to change the tube twice this week due to the rain washing all the crap on to the road... I don't want to spend. 25o on a decent trainer at the moment
When i die I just hope the wife doesn't sell my stuff for what I told her I paid for it other wise someone will be getting a mega deal!!!

  • I think a turbo or rollers are fine to use when its very bad out or as a warm up when its cold but yeah.. If you have a waterproof jacket, pants & overshoes its all good out

One you buy all the proper winter and wet kit a turbo starts to look like the cheap option!
  • Another vote for rollers here, a good workout if you up the cadence and you don't have to clean the bike after.

Although rule #5 does nag at me constantly when I don't venture out in the rain...
  • I like the turbo trainer
  • My wife and I will be moving into a new house which will have a garage for me to make a man cave out of in the coming months. Surprisingly a turbo is the first thing on the list, and I'm strangely excited about it!

  • Had my rollers 2 weeks now really like them so much more fun over a turbo, I,m actually getting more miles in now then I did before because the weather has been so bad.

Huh? I'm buying, not selling. I worded that pretty badly now that I reread it.

Best way to lose weight is to diet as well as exercise. I'm down from 85kg to 72kg mainly through fasting 5:2 (though I'm only going to be doing 1 day a week over xmas). Much quicker than exercise alone.
  • I bought a used turbo off eBay today. It was £50! Not much considering it'll keep me going in the winter months. And I can watch tv or listen to music if I please.

Having a proper go on it tomorrow :D

Just sold my turbo, used it quite a bit the first year, then didn't bother last year or this so I got rid. I'm thinking about getting some rollers to use in the garden but ultimately I'll just go out if it's grotty. If it's really bad I'll go out on the MTB and get mucky.

cheap trainers are generally rough, choppy, noisy, and won't give good resistance...

~£110-120 will get you a Minoura B60-R which gets glowing reviews at the budget end of the spectrum.

can you not just determine your own resistance by which choice of gear you select on the bike itself ?

yes but you can't go any further than 53*11 and whatever cadence you can do comfortably... and this is where the resistance limit of the Turbo comes in.

I went for it this avo, did 10 miles and got fu%#|ng soaked. Had a waterproof jacket on and was soaked underneath too, shoes squelching with neoprene overshoes, but was good, only ruined by a headache

Ah, I'm used to home trainers, so the hours are not that bad on it.

If I was looking a basic trainer to do 60 min sessions to burn off calories and really get a sweat up, is there anything you see in that trainer in the link that means I couldnt do that ?

  • Just got to pick your moments to get out if you can, it doesn't rain all the time (although today may be an exception)

Over Tue/Wed managed 50 miles and 5500ft of climbing, didn't get wet once. Would have done more but had to help with Xmas shopping at Tesco

Tomorrow's forecast is fine around these parts and not windy so should get this week up to 100 miles
