  • Cheers Cooldad, figured you'd reply first

Quite a lot out of action.
When were you last at Swinley any details on the general trail conditions with a brief dry spell hoping for decent?
Cheers for the heads up on parking i assume at the lookout (got a parking ticket £25 elsewhere only on friday so don't want a repeat).

CD and I were both last in swinley about 24 hours ago. The areas that were really wet are now really muddy. The areas that were a bit wet are now ok. Yes you only pay to park at the lookout. The Crowthorne end is still free, although getting busier and full of massive potholes now.

And it's being ridden by mongs who just ride over or round the barriers.

Hopefully problems with mongs to be solved by the Avenger like team of Captain America and the Hulk (well ranger Dan and Benpinnick anyway who's more Bruce Banner), who are planning on reblocking the trails, and putting up some blunt signs.

I believe part of the blue run. I heard a trees being cut down also.

Enjoyed having the jump gully to myself

To make you slightly happier, only NE Switchbacks and Monaco will go from your list, and I hope we can resinstate Monaco fairly soon (NE SB is gone forever though I am afraid).

Hope so. Monaco was the first trail we 'discovered' when we first started riding at Swinley, after riding up the motorway from the Lookout, and I've always enjoyed it

The narrow windy trail through the trees, that joins up with W9Y.

All work on the trails needs to be completed by March, or work will re-commence in September. (Due to the nesting birds)

They have re-surfaced W9Y, due to people riding before its ready.

If you are having a cheeky ride on them, please keep off or come March, none of the trails will be open.

According to Gorrick, who run the permit scheme:

The Swinley Forest Permit Scheme does not end until 31.3.13. Until then you need a permit to ride in the Forest and it also gives you the necessary 3rd party liability insurance cover. A Day Permit costs £2 and, if you buy one online at http://www.gorrick.com , print it off and take it with you, you can then get your £2 car parking charge (which gives you NO permisssion or insurance) refunded at the Look Out reception

    Technically you're right.
No need for a permit. But obviously you should get one.

CE has agreed to open some parts of the trails before the rest are finished. Hopefully that will stop (some) people riding the closed trails.
    More info as it comes.

How much work have they managed to complete? - With the weather we have had had, and the proposed building of three routes (Green,Blue,Red) - I will be amazed if they manage to finish any of them by March.

Well i presume that's good news! - On the new trails are they simply putting a more 'permanent' surface down? - or are they also adding obstacles ie rocks etc. It looked to me the blue trail would include routes such as Seagull, Stickler and Tank Traps - which seems about right for a blue run - however i was unsure how they would get a red grade on the other trail?

Seagull and Tank Traps are on the RED, Stickler is on the BLUE

That's odd as Sticker leads straight onto Tank Traps?

Yep, this is where the routes touch. So if you want to do both from the lookout you go blue to the end of Stickler, then Red until you end up back at the same point and then take the blue back to the start.

  • When we were riding back towards the look out and I saw the end of trail A, I nearly soiled my pants with excitement, that is going to be an awesome last leg it really is. Any ideas when that part opens?
My biggest fear is that should I crash, burn and die, my Wife would sell my stuff based upon what I told her I paid for it.
  • E looked pretty sexy too. i bollocked some lads for riding it last week. :-(

I think trail A is the start, not the end.

    Good news update.
All trails should be finished for opening on 1 April, and Stickler, Seagull and Deerstalker should be open mid February.

Is it still worth heading to swinley at the moment? Is it best to head to crownthorne side?

Crowthone better at the moment apparently - almost all the trails closed at Swinley and the remaining stuff is being used by everyone, churning up the soggy ground so its like a bog...

Or you could try Caesar's camp?
