  • Progress continues.... been learning to transfer from bed to wheelchair n back... hard work and totally knackering on arms n shoulders but getting easier each time.... also managing 20min+ on hand bike exerciser...

In other news, plans for loft conversion with 3 floor lift are in for approval, hopefully we'll get a quick ok on them.

Anyone work for Wessex lifts or a competitor and can do me a good deal???

Hey OB, glad to hear things are progressing. Surely you must get some preferential treatment from planning as it's on medical grounds. As soon as I wrote that I realised it sounded hopelessly naive.
Sorry, don't know anybody in the lift game.

 Not actually quite as daft as it sounds: most councils have a planning policy somewhere about increasing accessibility. The one bit of advice we always give our clients is to talk to their neighbours before the council send them an official letter inviting comments; that way they feel like they've been consulted.

Don't know anyone specifically at a lift manufacturer, I'm afraid. You might be able to get hold of a reconditioned one, but that's a bit of a long shot. 3 storeys and a car big enough for a wheelchair is quite a big thing to fit into/next to an existing building. It sounds like plans are already advanced some way, but happy to offer constructive thoughts if needed.

  • Still waiting to hear from Harrow planning dept., were supposed to respond by today but due to 'IT problems' wont respond till next week now...

Been swimming in the Aspire pool. Did 9 lengths in 45min on my back on Wednesday. Physio programme more intense too and close to doing unassisted bed to wheelchair. & back. transfers.

I've read most (not all) of this thread over the weeks, and I must say that I've got nothing but admiration for OB. To come through such a life changing accident with such a positive attitude is amazing. You are an inspiration to all of us.

I am very pleased to hear of the new arrival to the family OB, happy news, also great to hear of the progress you are making with the intensive physio. Good work fella.
  • went out for the whole day yesterday. first visited the accessible flat i'm going to be renting til house done. its in Islington. Its ok if a bit clinical, more hotel room than home. Then into the office to say hi to the guys and let my OT advise on changes, mainly auto-door openers on loo doors and a height adjustable desk. finally home for supper before coming back to RNOH about 11pm.

Planning dept have advised that lift shaft would not be approved as it rises above the hipped roof even tho it wont be visible from the road and want the shaft more internal to the building which wastes huge amounts of floor space :(

Sorry to hear about the planning for your lift - let me know if I can be of any help, but obviously don't want to tread on any toes if you've already got someone on it.

I bet you were exhausted after a day out. Hope you enjoyed it though.
That's a pain about the lift. RJS knows a lot more about it, but is it worth appealing?

I'm assuming that is because of the lift gear.
What about a telescopic ram pushing up from underneath rather than a motor pulling the cable up from the top?

or one of these, pushing up from underneath; much more compact and something that would only require a small pit.

one I did earlier, would need to check with the manufacturer whether it could be used for Passenger lift purposes.

Just one of the columns shown above will travel 12m and lift 11 tonnes; more than adequate for a 2 or 3 storey house, yet will collapse into a space of approx 1m.

Can't help thinking that if something went disastrously wrong in that picture, the hard hats would be a bit superfluous.

There are some very cool swimming pools which have that sort of kit installed underneath to raise and lower the floor, and permit access to a wider range of groups than a standard "hole in the floor" pool...

I think that I'm one of the people under the lift, and a bit later in the day it did almost go wrong with the chap in the yellow hat almost being squashed.

The guy in the yellow hat is stood in front of something that make it look like he's wearing a stetson. Presumably not cowboys to put that in though.

It was in USA but no, not wearing a stetson.

No, it's one of a number of devices I / we (the theatre industry) use for stage or orchestra lifts as the main lifting device.

Thanks, but I read you link and didn't get it.
I read the entry in Wikipedia and didn't get it.
I watched a video on Youtube and sort of almost get it.

If allowed for domestic use it does seem to be the solution to the lift problem.

OB, If you have drawings or specs for the lift that you're trying to achieve then drop me a PM, as this or another solution I have in mind would mean that the lift shaft would essentially stop just above the car.

With this information I'll be able to talk to the manufacturers involved and see whether we can come up with a solution; the only downside might be the budget though.
