Snowy (for surrey) walk to the station, nice crunch underfoot but not enough to affect the trains

It's like that here, we're are at sea level so don't get a huge amount of snow. Today was pretty much perfect when I got up as there was about an inch lying on fields and cars but it wasn't sticking on the roads so you get the picturesque views without disruption. A few (3 or 4) miles away where the ground is maybe 100-150m higher the photos I've seen show the roads covered and the snow quite a bit deeper.

Couple of geriatric things saved from oblivion yesterday:

21 year old Focus had its annual MOT failure, but the garage fitted me in to weld a patch on the sill and replace a lower suspension arm. It's mechanically fine but the bodywork's giving up. That's the third lot of welding in 5 years so it's off to the scrapper next year. Gives us plenty of time to look for a replacement.

And one of my few remaining teeth, which I demolished biting on an olive stone. It felt to me that there was too little left to rescue, but the dentist has managed to restore it with a substantial filling.

Definitely 2 wins in one day!

A group of property developers have been ordered to rebuild a Grade II-listed pub that they demolished without permission.

The historic Punch Bowl Inn at Hurst Green, Lancashire, needs to be rebuilt brick by brick within a year, a judge has ruled.

Yesterday in the minor snow flurry I had the absolute joy of driving around a stuck X5 in my 21 year old focus having been told that I had no chance because Mr microdick's "vehicle" couldn't manage it.

    All season tyres FTW*

(* Genuinely, very impressed with them. 90% as good as full winter tires and you have to drive like nob head to really notice the difference. Going to be hard not to justify the extra 30 odd quid difference for all 4)

Finished watching something on catch up and when the TV went back live that cr@ppy Stars In Their Eyes rip off was on. I was just about to turn over when I realised one of the the Stevie Nicks impersonators was a family friend.

Managing to find an old mini USB lead for my Olympus digital recorder (a brilliant bit of kit, BTW). I'd meant to record onto the SD card, but the recordings went onto the internal memory instead (operator error), and the only way to get them off was via the lead. Phew.

Tomorrow I hope to report on sunshine and shorts...

Bought it as a 6 month old ex-rental car. Mechanically it's been ultra reliable and it's still got the factory fitted exhaust. Very easy DIY servicing / maintenance. Still drives like a little gokart, and the fuel consumption is pretty good.
Sadly the electrics and bodywork are now giving up the ghost. Central locking is operated by some kind of poltergeist, the driver's window has packed up as has the radio, and the wiring to the tailgate has broken internally so the heated rear screen isn't. And it's pointless regassing the aircon since it's evidently losing refrigerant as fast as you can fill it. Periodically the speedo dies, and sometimes it loses the digital display too, but I CBA replacing the speed sensor because I've heard it can be a bit of a b@stard to extract from the gearbox...

Just need it to last another 369 days....

That's exactly what happened to my cholera yellow Renault 5. All 4 floor pan sections corroded to a kind of orange filigree / tea-strainer effect. Had it sitting on piles of bricks in the road outside the house while I hacked out the offending bits and bolted in some steel plate. SS aircraft quality fixings courtesy of my uncle who worked for BA. Probly wouldn't pass an MOT these days...

Yeah mine has the speedo issue too. Given that mine spent most of it's life being driven by a pensioner it's still in remarkably good condition. The rear suspension rebound has started to squeak rather concerningly after winter though...

I can send you a replacement radio tho... :)

Have to admit I hadn't realised there were resident pods of Orca in British waters. It does make you realise what is on your doorstep that we take for granted. My only slight criticism was it didn't have much of a structure to it, switching from whales to eagles to puffins to dragonflies in various geographic locations. Stunning camera work as always though.

I heard on the radio that the first episode was intended as a kind of overview subsequent ones will focus on different ecosystems so may be a little more structured

That would be good. Episode 1 did feel like a fast, skim over lots of things.
