Thanks - have seen some rather green & brown looking ski slopes in the news.briantrumpet said:Stevo_666 said:Anyhow, planning planning first ski trip since 2019 cheers me up. Lost two seasons to lockdowns and one to injury so am champing at the bit to get back on two planks.
Fingers crossed for you... the resorts need some snow... I ended up taking off my leg warmers this afternoon as it was 16C.
The plan is to go late Feb/early March so hopefully not a problem.
If there's not a good dump of snow before then, the French ski industry is going to be pretty stuffed (I think there was a report in the Telegraph on their lack-of-snow grief so far - it''s hit France worse than Austria, I think). It'll also cause all sorts of ecological problems later in the year, as the melting snow feeds all the lower rivers for a good part of the summer too. It just feels that past certainties are anything but these days.0 -
Taking off the legwarmers for the latter part of a 50-miler on New Year's Eve here. It really shouldn't be this mild, but I'll overlook that for the moment...

A friend is skiing in Trois Vallees at the moment and the slopes are apparently pretty good though I assume that’s due to artificial snow as the resort look comes clear.0

Stevo might be exercised that French climate protesters have been sabotaging artificial snow machines... apparently they're not very good for the climate.0 -
Watching Mrs Brown's Boys Christmas speshull: made me laugh, a lot. So iz I woke or not woke? He he he.0

Nah, there'll be plenty of real snow by time I go. Not me - tried it once after a couple of musician friends were raving about it, and lasted about five minutes.0 -

It's also very woke for the BBC to show something so clearly for special needs viewers in prime time.0 -

HNY to all. Keep up the good work.0 -
Yes, saw a couple of minutes of the weather forecast this morning and they showed a map of western Europe all much warmer than average. Was thinking that must be why your photos look so green.briantrumpet said:Stevo_666 said:Anyhow, planning planning first ski trip since 2019 cheers me up. Not sure if it cheers me up or annoys me but I actually got a ballot place for this year's Snowdonia marathon (still 0 from about a dozen attempts for London though!).0

Now I know that the end of the world is nigh: not only did I not cook too much pasta to go with the chicken concoction, but none of it stuck in the pan when I poured it into the colander.0

Haha, a benefit of (local) fame when an SNCF bus driver confirms on Facebook that he'll be driving the bus I'm catching tomorrow morning.0

Why do you have 4,000 followers in your holiday home region? Seems a lot.briantrumpet said:Haha, a benefit of (local) fame when an SNCF bus driver confirms on Facebook that he'll be driving the bus I'm catching tomorrow morning.

Seems they like photos taken by a random English bloke who loves the place as much as (or even more than) Frenchies themselves, and now knows it a lot better than most of them. Plus Facebook is quite a clever tool for turning 'likes' into followers. It's actually been quite an interesting experiment, changing over from a blog (primarily done for family and friends) to a Facebook Page, and discovering its reach.0 -
House admin:
Managed to get some lovely garage shelves of Freecycle. Had to hacksaw the top 30cm off as my shed is tiny. Built them up and tidied shed.
Ironed all my shirts. That should keep me for at least a month (I generally wear each one twice, esp over winter) and I often wear a jumper so no need to be too fussy all the time.
Doing a major attic trip from the landing / spare room.
Weather looks good tomorrow AM and work in a good place so off for a good run.
For 5 minutes at least, I feel trivially cheered.0 -

The Telegraph headline:
"HMRC targets bereaved families with raid on inheritance tax"
I'm not sure what people The Telegraph thinks are the target of inheritance tax... hard not to be bereaved if you're about to inherit from a dead relation.
A more accurate headline would be "Correct inheritance tax collected."0 -
It cheers me up that you think tax is that simple. From the same article:briantrumpet said:The Telegraph headline:
"HMRC targets bereaved families with raid on inheritance tax"
I'm not sure what people The Telegraph thinks are the target of inheritance tax... hard not to be bereaved if you're about to inherit from a dead relation.
A more accurate headline would be "Correct inheritance tax collected."
Some of the families investigated by HMRC may have knowingly avoided paying death duties. But others are likely to have fallen foul of complex IHT rules and difficulties valuing assets.
Mr Warburton said: “Property and shares are relatively straightforward but problems can arise with valuable chattels such as pictures and antiques. HMRC have wised up to that and now ask to see details of home contents insurance to spot missing items from the assets submitted.
“Another problem arises with lifetime gifts. Gifts within seven years before the death typically form part of the estate, but how do the executors know about these when the person they most want to ask has inconveniently just died? If they kept detailed records that is great, but many people do not do so.”"I spent most of my money on birds, booze and fast cars: the rest of it I just squandered." [George Best]0 -

More (correct) tax being paid means a lower deficit for the country, surely? This story's definitely one for the good news thread.Stevo_666 said:
