Seemingly trivial things that annoy you

No. But if the hundreds of miles of UK motorways have a speed limit of 70 other than at times of congestion, randomly reducing the speed limit by 10mph over an arbitrary, rural stretch isn’t going to save us from anything.pangolin said:Surely most of us acknowledge by now that air quality is not just affected in the immediate vicinity of a car / plane / lorry / factory...

No. If the government made the motorway speed limit 60 on environmental grounds, I could agree or disagree but at least know where I stand.
I was annoyed at being held to a lower speed for no discernible reason on a very empty motorway.
Stevo made a reasonable suggestion that it could be environmentally based. I simply pointed out that seemed unlikely given the nature of that bit of road. Generally that happens near built up areas.1 -
I’m sure that the smart motorway we’re talking about was the pilot for using 60mph for all motorway roadworks.morstar said:

I’ve see this in a few places near towns on other roads. I can assure you that you would be incredibly hard stretched to save the lungs of any human by reducing the speed between stoke and south of stafford. It’s endless miles of open fields for most of that stretch.Stevo_666 said:morstar said:Carrying on from Intriguing speed limit encounter on the M6, I also have an annoying one.
Over the last 4 years or so, the M6 between Stoke and South of Stafford (20-30) miles or so has been smarted.
I have driven it 4 times in the last 2 weeks and even when empty in the evening, it seems to be permanently set to 60mph.
Why?
I've occasionally seem some bollox on the motorway signs about speed being set to 60 to improve air quality. Clearly a lot of people live there...morstar said:Carrying on from Intriguing speed limit encounter on the M6, I also have an annoying one.

I've done a number of M6 transits up and down these past several months, another coming Sunday evening.
The air quality 60 signs I've seen have been around the elevated section through Birmingham, past J6 and upwards. Though usually it's congested and slower anyway.
The section around Stafford with the continual 60 limit on pretty empty carriageways looks like just a carry over from the roadworks, the lane closures I saw earlier in year have all gone. Still testing the tech?
And the bit where the works end (southbound after J14?) and national speed limit sign shows does mean 70. I've not been ticketed by cameras when always get back up to 70(ish) after miles and miles of sleep inducing stay at 60.0 -
Here's the details of the air quality trials. That section of the M6 is not part of it, but junction 6 to 7 is. https://nationalhighways.co.uk/our-work/environment/air-quality-and-noise/air-quality/air-quality-speed-limit-trials/0

They've just recently smarted a section of the M4 (3-12) and are in the process of removing the cones etc but they've announced that a temporary 60mph speed limit will be in place while final testing of the smart technology including stopped vehicle detection takes place, so I assume the same applies to that bit of the M6.morstar said:Carrying on from Intriguing speed limit encounter on the M6, I also have an annoying one.

Not sure over what distance the lower limit applies, but at 60, 42 miles takes 6 minutes longer than at 70. About 8.6 seconds a mile. The entire M6 toll road is only 27 miles long, so it couldn't add 20 minutes to your journey unless you are operating some sort of shuttle service. Ours emailed us this week (Monday I think) to tell us that because it was hot they were keeping the kids inside, but could we please pick them up early so they could have some time at home in a paddling pool etc. Obviously gardens are cooler at home.TheBigBean said:School/nursery letters.
