Big shame. Guess Pinarello paid through the nose for that.

    Shame? expand please?

Im sure they are both happy to continue what has been a very successful partnershi on both sides, for example Pina can claim to make the bike the last TWO winners of the tour has riden.

I think you say shame simply because you dont like Sky.

Its probably more to do with Sky Italia.. making Team Sky more appealing to Italians and therefore selling the Sky Italia product better.

Not to mention the fact they've just designed the new Bolide together.. so it shouldn't really be a surprise!

Who would you like to have seen them go with? They'd need a strong brand since its as much about their image as it is about the manufacturer's.. so that rules out felt, canyon, focus, merida, orbea, ridley, lapierre

    Leaving:

    Cannondale - sponsor team
    BMC - sponsor team
    Giant - Argos Shimano?
Specialized - OPQS, Saxo - would be too many teams.. and I don't like the brand
    Trek - LA connection
    Scott - can't see it
Cervelo - they're happy with Garmin
Bianchi - just moved to Belkin

British bikes maybe? Boardmans?!? I think money would come into play on that one though!

Merida I already mentioned.. and none of the other brands suggested would fit the bill as none are particularly strong or well known brands, so wouldn't fit well with Sky.

Apart from Ribble... if you squint its almost 'Sky' blue

They wouldn't turn up in time for the season and even Sir Dave would struggle to get through to their customer services! They could go on Dolans or Condors  Ultimately every team is riding the bikes that offer them the best sponsorship deal I should think.
  • The pros probably care more about which saddle they sit on than the frame supplied to the team.

I don't know about that, If you read Charley weegilus (Sp) book he is very critical of frames which he was given, mainly in the first Tour he rode.

Also I remeber reading that Cav had been to Pinarello last year to test the bike to see if they had to make it stiffer for his sprint technique. they didn't

And the most successful bike in Tour history. 11 victories I think.

Actually, that's rubbish  Don't drink and type. Possibly 9.5 (Pereiro on an Opera).

Pereiro was on a Pinarello in 2006. And are you counting the TVTs that Delgado and Indurain used which were badged as Pinarellos?

You’re probably right that the deal is related to Sky Italia but I don't agree with your assessment about which are/aren't ‘strong' brands. Considering aspects like popularity/sales, reputation, marketing, and review-ratings/quality, several of those you rule out could be considered ‘strong’ and at the same time, some you list as ‘strong’ are questionable.

In quality review-ratings Giant and even moreso Bianchi rarely fare as well as most other brands you list. Giant do sell a lot, but Merida aren’t far behind in sales and are regularly judged far better quality in reviews. Cannondale and Canyon are about the same in how they are rated in reviews but Canyon sell slightly more in Europe.

Based on marketing strength, you also can’t rule out Focus, because it is one of several brands (others including Raleigh nowadays) owned and marketed by Derby Cycle, the biggest bike seller in Germany. Similar for Lapierre – one of several brands (Koga being another) nowadays owned and marketed by the Acell Group, the biggest bike seller in the Netherlands.
