The cadence auto-pause function may solve this. Or, a turbo like the Wahoo Kickr which will keep the load on even when out the saddle, but that's a pretty expensive solution!

I bought a Kickr last year and as you say, it's a perfect way [albeit expensive] of being able to get out of the saddle properly during an interval.

  • How have you found the Kickr Dodger? A bit of kit I'm seriously considering investing in.

One of the best cycling investments I've ever made!

The workouts are brutal as the resistance is auto adjusted with cadence [so you can't take any micro-rests]. The connectivity with loads of training platforms is amazing. The trainer is rock solid and is quiet enough to use in an apartment. If you have the money, I wouldn't hesitate in buying one.

  • One thing I've been wondering is do you just simply leave it in one gear and the turbo does the rest?

Yep, on TR for example, if you change your cadence the resistance ramps up/down - making it super effective as you have no chance of taking it easy for a few seconds.

  • Must be a similar principle to lab bikes I've used, where they change the intertia/torque (can't remember which now!). I'm currently waiting to go offshore but once I've got some decent wage packets under my belt think I'll invest. Virtual power is serving me well at the moment mind you. I can see me picking up a Powertap as well at this rate :D

Does anyone have tips on matching up the ride categories that Joe Friel uses against specific rides on TrainerRoad? He breaks them into things like Endurance, Force, Muscular Endurance etc.

Had a quick Google around, but didn't really find much. I might write to them, TR are normally pretty responsive.

Started my TrainerRoad journey last night with an 8min FTP test. Spent an hour in the kitchen in a pool of sweat, which was an interesting sensation, compounded further when the wife put the oven on for dinner  .

So far, I'm impressed with the software and the integration with my Ant+ devices.

What's surprised me is how much more sore I am this morning after what would have been a short and steady outdoor ride. I'm assuming that's because on the trainer there's no freewheeling, its just constant effort.

I'm pretty certain TR uses Coggans zones for their training levels, so may be worth looking at those.

Cyclops Fluid 2 also seem to get very good reviews, also been recommended for use with TR and were on special with Evancycles earlier in the week - not tried them but i'd be happy getting on from what i've heard.

Set all mine up again for this year last night, so doing the 2O minute test for this years F.T.P later.

Just one comment on the Cyclops Fluid 2 , which is the trainer I have!! I don't trust either Power Curve for it. Im currently using the Beta (or I was last year) and I m pretty sure it gives results higher than it should.

Its not bothered me too much because I don't need to know my real power, I just use the V.P figure to chart gains and set intensity.

Once I m into it again I want to introduce so Sufferfest videos. I have 2 Lap tops, A decent one, and one in the shed I use purely for TR. If I download the Sufferfest stuff onto the decent P.C and then put it on my standalone hard drive, I take it I can then just move them from the hard drive to the other lap top I m using for TR.

Or basically what format are the files and can I transfer them from machine to machine.

Cheers for the info - good to know.

    Yep.

They're just MP4s so yes, you can copy them from machine to machine or leave them on an external hard-drive and swap that between machines.

New to Trainerroad and using it with my Wahoo Kickr. Really impressed so far, and there's nowhere to hide with the 'Erg' mode. I haven't chosen a training plan yet, just picking random sessions at the moment.

I think I met my match this evening with the 'Wheeler' workout. Basically a simulated breakaway/race - only 45 minutes long but 20% of the time at VO2Max and 13% at Anaerobic. I had to dial down the target power to 95% for the final interval as I mentally and physically cracked. Not sure if my FTP is a tad high or whether the session is meant to be that hard!

Did Wheeler last night after seeing your description of it - yes it really is that tough!

That's encouraging then, I guess it is meant to be a tough session.

I thought a 20 min FTP test was hard until I tried Wheeler!

Still enjoying trainer road but the weather is awesome so not indoors as much as I was expecting.

I am being a div but how do I delete individual sessions that I don't want??

If you go onto career, click on the workout you don't want and icons should appear on the right (facebook etc) and there should be one that looks like a bin. That should delete it.

In the 'App' itself.. Career tab, there is an option button to delete workout, under FB and Resynch

With the weather being changeable and certainly getting darker earlier I have been trying to get going on TR again. I have spent quite a while reading through this thread, I am over halfway now. But a few questions I would answers to please.

I have a Satori Tacx which from the reading I have done so far, looks like I need to set to Level 6 on the resistance and set to Level 5 on TR to achieve some consistency with 'real' power. Is this still the correct thing to do or have there been updates that I haven't yet reached in my reading?

do I keep the bike in one gear or can I change up and down as I feel the need to increase resistance?

I have tried watching a film with TR but the Satori makes too much noise, or my laptop doesn't have a loud enough volume. And I haven't even tried turning a fan on! (but I will soon). I have thought about headphones but I think I will just get them really sweaty so I will just rely on normal sound. Do other people have sweaty headphones or am I just worrying unnecessarily?

Thanks to all the previous posters who have offered advice on how to get the most from TR. I'm off to read some more...

Try the Satori Powertap profile which is in the main turbo list on the App. Pretty accurate power profile .
I use Level 7 which equates to a road feel and use the gears to lessen or increase the workload.
Noise on the Satori can be an issue -- I reckon mostly tyre choice can be your culprit.
I use old tyres .. the best (quietest) performance came from a Schwalbe 25mm until it delaminated itself.. using a Lithion 23mm and I can get a resonance sound at higher revs that can be detracting but using a USB mini speaker boosts the laptop volume .

    thanks for swift response JGSI.

I will try setting TR to Satori Powertap 7 and set my Satori Tacx to level 7 and see how I get on.

An old tyre is a good idea. I am using quite a smooth one already but I will look and see if there is anything wider hiding in my shed.

I have just done a FTP test last week and beginning to follow a TR plan. I just find watching the line move a bit boring and I have found the Sufferfest videos a great way to pass the time ;-) just a bit worried that I should be balancing following their plan but including some Suffervids.
  • Well my new Kurt Road Machine turned up today (first turbo). I signed up for Trainer Road and did the 20 minute test. FTP 220 - LTHR 148. http://www.trainerroad.com/cycling/rides/1215144-20-Minute-Test

A lot of work to go but already looking forward to a hard winter in preparation for next year. The aim for me is to keep up with the local ride at the weekend and then (providing I get a place) the Ride London event in August. I've got a few other events lined up along the way.

I'm going to start with the traditional base (low volume due to cross training playing hockey twice a week too). Any tips? Or shall I just get on and ride?! Haha. Glad to be part of the TrainerRoad club.
  • Hey guys. Got a Garmin 500, with cadence sensor coming for it tomorrow and will buy the heart rate soon. Also got an Elite Velore Mag trainer, and was looking into using trainer road. There is five resistance settings on the trainer 1 being pretty easy to spin, 5 being almost impossible to move. What resistance is best to use with trainer road and am I fine to swap gears for different efforts or do I have to use the same gear and increase cadence?

    Thanks for the help

Pick the right Volare power profile... go through the drop down list on the App... there are a few incl a beta... pick your exact model.
Pick and stick with a resistance and use the gears.
  • i have

    gamin 800 + powertap

when using trainer road, can i record the ride, then upload the file to strava? i want it to read 0 miles, so it doesn't affect my mileage year to date (i would like to reserve that for outdoors) but so the training load effects my fitness/freshness graph

    cheers

I upload my trainer rides to Strava. I turn off GPS on my 810 and it automatically sets it as a "Stationary Trainer" ride and it doesn't count towards MTS Challenges. It does record the mileage though, which no doubt count in the YTD/LT totals.

  • Once the session is saved on your Trainerroad account (which should be automatic) you can download the session and upload to Strava. Select "workout" when you upload it (rather than "ride") and it will save without affecting your actual miles logged.
