Skin fold calipers are about as reliable as a Greek bus timetable Or bmi come to that.

The best advice I ever heard for those that need to control their weight is just use a mirror. The eye is far more effective at detecting changes in body fat than any scales or other device.

But excellent for finding genetic criminals and other social undesireables -

    Phrenology, discredited you say?

BMI is wank unless you're a health worker wanting an easy point of reference to show the short-breathed behemoth in front of you that their fatness isn't something subjective but is very definitely something that will kill them. Provided you're normally proportioned then you only have to touch a dumb bell or do a couple of pull-ups to end up in the "marginally overweight" category.

It's accurate to a couple of percent. Whereas BMI is entirely inaccurate .. scratch that, it's not inaccurate, it simply isn't a measure of bodyfat, as shown in my Mr Olympia example.

Now since this is a cycling forum and not weight watchers, I kinda assumed most would rather know how to work out if they need to loose 7 pounds or 2 stone, rather than just guess at it. If you don't care about accuracy, then don't get you knickers in a twist, but some people might appreciate the info.
The best advice I ever heard for those that need to control their weight is just use a mirror. The eye is far more effective at detecting changes in body fat than any scales or other device.

Many people who are overweight or have weight problems look at themselves and think they either look normal, or, grossly abnormal. Very few can look at a person and estimate a bodyfat percentage, unless they've studied training or nutrition or something in the line of health. And of course, you can't see viceral fat. 'Skinny-fat' people can often look 'normal', be a normal weight and BMI, and yet be at higher risk of heart disease that normal. Calipers will tell you this, and potentially save or lengthen your life if you choose to act.

The mirror can tell you if you're around 10-12%, as for most people you'll see abs around that level. But once the abs are gone it's hard to tell how much more fat is there, until at 25%+ you start to look overweight (for men). The difference in the amount of fat between 12.5% and 25% for a guy with 140lbs/10st of lean mass, is that one guy carries 17.5lbs of fat and the other 35lbs. Would you rather know in advance how much youre carrying or just wait till you're properly overweight before you do something.
All the above is just advice .. you can do whatever the f*ck you wana do!

Just back from Holiday - should have gone to Equitorial Guinea BMI of 25, which is nice...

Cameroon. Which is a biscuit! I haven't looked how far down or up that is.

    Calipers or BMI?

Of course calipers are much more accurate, but BMI is a quicker estimate.

BMI always gets disrupted by massive muscles. I think the entire England Rugby team were classified as obese when their measurements were used.

If you really want to know your measurements then use calipers or VO2max and a whole host of others. If you just want a rough idea, then BMI and a tape measure around your waist.

A bit of guesswork regarding the average male but the figure for a UK male, 40 year old at 5'10" is 13 stone 10.5 lbs.
None of the above should be taken seriously, and certainly not personally.

UK is in the long list of countries you get when you put in yer details. Anyway, it was originally posted as a laugh and nothing more. Dw300 probably needs to stop taking things so seriously, maybe he's got roid rage.

He makes a good point though, I'm 6' 2 and come out with a BMI of 21. I always thought I was rather skinny but after checking myself with some calipers it turns out I'm almost one hundred percent body fat. My Abs have 'dissapeared'. I'm now on the slim fast shakes and steroids to redress the balance.

I got a BMI of 22 and Congo.

I'm 53, 5'10" and 71kilos (so much for SI units  ), I dropped a couple of kilos when I first started doing some regular exercise about 10 months ago, but it's gone back on again as muscle.

The older I get, the better I was.

I just googled this meathead, since I've never heard of him. <sarcasm>You're right though, he seems like a very typical and average looking guy. There is every reason to throw out BMI measurements since they don't apply too well to this very standard looking fellow.</sarcasm>

I'd say you were the one that started getting passive-aggressive, when I said BMI was useless for determining fat. You thread is titled "So, exactly how fat are you?" after all.

I'm sorry for taking things seriously, I hope I didn't ruin your thread too much. I'll be honest, I mostly read the Training forum and probably didn't realise I was posting in the BB when I posted the first reply.

29...not good, 1.92 and 107 kgs, BUT, in my defence, I have had nearly 6 months off the bike (renovating/converting a chapel), and the weight is coming off now I've got the cobwebs off the bike(s).

Need to drop below 100kgs for an E2E France trip, next June...
Jim456, I'm sure Jay Cutler (4 x Mr.Olympia, multi-millionaire bodybuilding legend) is devastated at your damning description of him as a meathead....troll.

    prb006,

Sorry to hear about the BMI challenges you face - are you sure you're not just 100% solid muscle. Jay Cutler being 4 x steroid user of the year/multi millionaire orange tan man and him being a meathead are not mutually exclusive.

    He is beyond tragic.

Is anyone here brave enough to admit that they're into this type of thing? Including all the orange paint.

now who on EARTH would get involved in a sport like that? ;)

It's an odd body building phenomina; pressumably the trend began as it was deemed that being tanned looked better, but it's now found a sort of deviant niche in skin colour that has nothing to do with what applying sunlight to skin actually acheives.

Girls from the northern conurbations on the other hand have an excuse; in there day-to-day life they're very unlikely to come across someone with a real tan, so not realising that mid-ginger isn't the colour that skin naturally goes, is understandable.
