Speaking of cannock. how deep are the floods in the woods at the mo, camping up there this weekend and mtbing, apparently you've had some rain up there?! 8)Specialised Camber Comp 2011

Helmet, no helmet, pads no pads, neck brace, no neck brace. Don't give a toss.
People can do what the hell they like. I wish cyclists would just just take a leaf out of the skier's and snowboarder's book and stop being so bloody judgmental about the subject.
Plenty of people wear lids whilst on the slopes - but no-one gives a toss whether you do or don't. Just as it should be. Look after yourself as you choose and leave others to make their own choices. You only need two tools: WD40 and Duck Tape.
If it doesn't move and should, use the WD40.
If it shouldn't move and does, use the tape.0 -

No seatbelts, roll bar, airbags, collapsible steering column, side impact protection, ABS or high level brake light and I don't wear a crash helmet.
Sometimes wear eye protection, probably not to go to the shops but if I plan on driving over about 40mph.
Nearly always wear a helmet on my MTB.0 -
It should be a law to have to wear a helmet, In my eyes.0

You're supposed to wear them on your head, not in your eyes.

There's not really good enough evidence to demonstrate a need for that law. There's much better evidence to suggest that helmet laws discourage cyclists. So then you end up with a potential health impact from people doing less exercise. Not a simple situation but legislation isn't the answer IMO- if they could prove a large positive effect then maybe. But equally IMO, I don't think that large positive effect exists. Serious head injuries- in fact serious injuries of any sort- are pretty rare in cycling.Uncompromising extremist0 -

Yep normally minor or fatal."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

I do wear a helmet, though think about the number of times you've hit your head at all. I bet it isn't that much.0

I've landed on my head a fair few times this year alone, for that reason I'm glad I was wearing one. If other people don't want to that's fine, doesn't really affect me.
At the same time I also remember a helmet doesn't make me invincible. I'm a hockey keeper and have been knocked out before now whist wearing a lid in a match, admittedly it probably stopped worse injury but I'm very aware that a bike helmet is designed to do the same thing, reduce injury or the chances of it, but not stop it all togther.0 -
Saw a bunch at Cannock without helmets a few weeks back too. Chav types, shouting and having fun on a bunch of BSOs round the bit where it says to be quiet.
As long as they're having fun and my taxes aren't paying for their NHS bills.
Oh, wait, I don't pay taxes anyway :P0 -
my first post was a question not a statement I love how people are saying that I said I wouldn't treat people which clearly wasn't what I said. maybe I could of worded it better and I shouldn't of said "retards" but put yourself in my position and other emergency services who see things everyday that could of been avoided or lessened with a few simple precautions. some good points made and I guess that id hate this country becoming even more of a nanny state than it is and if everyone stopped having incidents id be out of a job which I love. You will never convince me thought that not wearing a helmet is anything but idiotic.
And as a side note why does any thread on here where people have a difference of opinion have to get so personal when it doesn't need to be.0 -

This, it's wet and muddy outside. People can't ride bikes if it's wet and muddy, they'll get all horrible and dirty :shock:0 -

I take it easy and don't wear a helmet when I'm on my own because it lives in a friends van, So do some smelly shoes. I know my limits when I'm lidless and assume most other people do.Papa? Nicole0

appy wrote:raving lunatic? that made me laugh, not at all i just feel that people should take some precaution even if its just a token gesture. Fraud? i love my job and treat everyone the same, i wouldnt do it otherwise. Just because i dont agree with something doesnt mean ill treat them different but it doesnt mean im not allowed to have an opinion on it. Isnt that the whole point of a forum to have opinions and put the world to rights?0

unlike you I don't start threads to gain appraisal as you put it, and id say judging by this thread more people agree with wearing helmets that don't. how am I changing my tune? I stand by what I originally said but admit I could of worded it better, that's far from changing my tune. Or maybe your post was just to gain appraisal from some forum members?0

I love the I know my limits posts though, (nothing to do with a helmet are great in this post) honestly i was riding some trails in FOD last year admitedly onthe DH but still early up sheepsteeth where it is easy, had some friends with me who were not confident and so i was taking it easy "well within my ability" and I crashed hitting the side of my head on the ground, mostly soft loam but some good log type items close by (had my full face on anyways so was fine but might have been fine with out who knows).
The reason I came off though? because sometimes going as fast as you can stops you slipping! things happen, conditions change and you can not say I will not have an accident... it's a fricken accident! So if your a helmetn wearer and believe in them but say sometimes i don't wear it it because i'm riding in my limits i think your a bit mental to be honest!
Those who don't believe in helmets, carry on.0 -

Helmets are pretty vital along my canal route... Many low bridges to try and avoid.
A colleague of mine was jogging on the canal towpath, bumped his head on a bridge, passed out, and fell in the canal. Hopefully that won't happen but shows even a slight knock can be enough to take you out.2011 Carrera Fury
