My bike's standard chainring I believe - since it was a works bike rather than the usual from the website.

Does anyone here actually feel they need a double? I've never had a problem with spinning out on my compact.

No. And for that very reason.

Maybe it depends on terrain. Flipping the switch marked 'AWESOME' and engaging reheat on a descent could have me spinning out.
As I get fitter (which doesn't seem to be happening this year) I find myself riding faster and further up the gears. I could see better riders than me needing a proper double, but I don't think I'm quite there yet.
Also, some people may be a bit LiT and have "High Torque Legs" so need the bigger gears.

How many times do i need to say it?

Need? Possibly not, but having always ridden a 52T big ring, it's a difficult habit to break. I've recently changed to a 39T inner ring instead of my usual 42T and I've really noticed the bigger gap between rings, in a negative way. 34T would drive me mad.

Someone finally got to the only problem with a compact chainset. Took longer than I thought it would
There are work arounds but I am contemplating a standard double for my next groupset. Either that or a 38 tooth if available.

So keeping the same cassette and using a bigger chainring would give higher gears. I know how gears work, I'm just expressing a different point of view.
    In case you don't understand, 54 x 11 is a higher ratio than 54 x 12.

Would you like me to write it in red? Does that help you understand an alternative view point?

50 x 12 still takes some spinning out. It gives you 40mph at 123rpm, which for any London hill is quick and for any cyclist who knows how to spin is far from spinning out.

Like I said, I think it's a standard chainring on this particular bike.

I'd have prefered a compact, since, y'know, I'm spinny and slow, but I'll settle for the manly gears. Won't need a compact if I cycle in and around London anyway.

I think that I can grasp that one
Most people I know that run on standard double chainsets are using a 12-25 cassette.
Most people I know that run on a compact chainset are using a 11-23 cassette.

    I don't know anyone using 54 x 11, even those who race.

I think the issue with compacts is that the 34 ring is a bit small for most applications, and a big jump from the 50. I imagine if I got a double then I would get a lot more use out of the 39 than I get out of my 34. Reminds me, I have a 36 that I should make use of...

Campag are introducing new compact ratios I think, something like 52/38 I think it is, which could also go 52/36. Might be a good compromise.

I quite like my 50/36 chainring for London and most Kent type riding, with 12-27 cassette. I only struggle on a few steep hills round my way and I haven't got 'proper' cyclist's legs. Also the 'jump' between the two rings is quite OK for me.

    Very.

New bike - met Stephen Roche at lunch.

    I'm a bit over-excited.

never really found this to be the case, although I tend to use a two handed shift coming from the 34 to the 50: at the same time I shift up two sprockets on the cassette. It makes for a much smaller gearing jump, and no, I don't drop the chain doing this.

    Hopefully tonight. If not, tomorrow.

I'm hoping I'm set up enough to make my way to a Wheelers club ride on Sunday - which reminds me. Should drop them a mail.

Better set off home soon, it's meant to pee it down this evening/tomorrow evening and you don't want it to melt on your very first ride.

I'd say you'll get hit about 5:30 to 6 looking at the rain radar. I'm pretty much on the same schedule so I'm caning it on the way home tonight
