Off to the seaside tomorrow.. got permission to take my bike, so checked on Strava for a couple of likely KOMs. Found 1 thats a likely one in the bag - that'll upset the locals

Only been on the bike for a few months but downloaded Strava after reading about it on here.
There are a few segments around where I generally cycle and, over the past couple of weeks I've managed to get myself off the bottom of the segment leagues (just in most cases!).
Thing is, I can see a couple of glaring omissions. For instance THE local hill (highest point in the county I think) is not designated as a segment.
The question I have is 1) Who uploads these, and 2) Is there any way that they can be uploaded by a Strava user such as myself?Wilier Izoard XP0 -

Go out and do a ride which includes the missing hill. Strava may automatically create it as a segment but if it doesn't then you can just create it (only after you have ridden it first). Just look at your ride and there's a create segment button.
But please make sure you're accurate with the start and finish, winds me up when someone creates a cr4p one.0 -

Yeah all segments are sections people have rode - if you create a segment yourself Strava cleverly compares it to its database of segments and asks you of you want to use a pre-existing segment or whether to use your newly created one.
All you do is click on your route scroll down to a button saying create new segment and create the start and finish points then everyone can see it.
By the way for security go to your settings and set the point at which your ride starts and finishes - a guy off here has posted a vid telling you what to do.

Add me on Strava (search Willhub . )
I had someone steal one from me yesterday. They averaged 30mph up a 5% 1/2 mile gradient. They can keep it, I'm not going back after that.0 -
I've just created a bike radar 'club' on Strava. Since so many of us are using it I thought it might be nice to have an area there to see each others rides etc.
*edit* - never mind - I see there's already a group like this - d'oh!

Why don't you do a new one for the roadies0

Check the rest of their route - could well be their chosen transport for the day had four wheels not two! I had one a few weeks back and scratched my head - then looked at the ride and he'd been doing 60 mph on the M62 prior to his KOM triumph0 -
I went through his route with a fine tooth comb. He was cycling, worse, he was offroading. With 8 others, the local mountain bike group. I live in hope he'd put the bike on a rack on the car and not turned the Garmin off.
But I won't flag it, he might just be that awesome.0 -
Strava is great for training and motivation. I reckon the whole country, even the world must be getting faster because of Strava
This is my favourite/worst segment http://app.strava.com/segments/1265671
Someone knocked me off the top spot on Sunday so I sat there and fumed for a few minutes then jumped on the bike and beat him by 3 seconds. Nearly killed me though0 -
Certainly helps get a bit more effort into the commute (too early to race the thicket of bikes that appear after 0730); I'd be tempted to just spin along at a comfortable speed but a few sectors "oblige" me to open the taps here & there.
As toI had someone steal one from me yesterday. They averaged 30mph up a 5% 1/2 mile gradient. They can keep it, I'm not going back after that.
Well, wow, on an MTB. Maybe a massive tail wind?0 -

Probably. Makes it hard to just enjoy a bimble though, knowing theres a segment ahead and getting all competetive.0 -

Someone in the group just added a comment suggesting they edit the post ride transport out of the ride!0 -

When using the privacy feature, does it still track the whole ride even though it won't appear on the map?
Also what do the majority of people use, 500ft or 1000ft? Just out of interest.2019 Ribble CGR SL

yes it still tracks the whole ride- its your gps device thats doing the tracking remember- its just that when a stranger comes to view your ride they see the start point as being up to over 500m away - so they cant pinpoint your home.
I chose 1000 simply because it makes it harder to find my lair - but you can change it at anytime. The dissenter is every human being at those moments of his life when he resigns

Thanks for that, I've set it to 1000 also. I'd be gutted if I lost my bikes, of course they're insured but I'm quite attached to them.2019 Ribble CGR SL

is that right? whenever I finish my ride I pause and check the distance but once uploaded its always slightly shorter than recorded. I just thought that was down to the privacy settings not showing my start/finish point :?0 -

Which hill out of interest?0 -
I increased my privacy from 100 to 500 meters last night. Problem is it's clipped the end off my closest segment and removed my times entirely from the leaderboard. I was last anyway (only one other person had ridden it) but it was a nice measure of my improvements. I've since tried to change it back but it's still doing the 500m exclusion on rides i've already done.
I've also repeatedly had to enter my bike weight in order to get power approximations even though the weight is saved under my gear.
Apart from those two problems I really like Strava; it highlights perfectly just what a weak cyclist I am
Even with the privacy exclusion zone, it wouldn't take much intelligence to plot where someone lives knowing the exclusion distance options and providing it that they've left their house in two difference directions for the plots to intersect.0 -
Can someone tell me why my phone has got my average speed horribly wrong today?
http://app.strava.com/rides/9308126
I expect I was doing about 20mph, the segments I think are accurate though.
I really miss my Garmin I want it back0 -
Just an update, the locals can keep it!
Stupid of me to think I could get up a 16%er with 39/21, but I couldnt be bothered to change cassette or take easier geared (slightly) bike, so I improved my tans lines along the seafront for an hour or so, then fell asleep and let the sun get me in some odd places.
Actually today has just made it clear that 3 races within 5 days has taken its toll this week, so very easy going until next 'appointment' on Tuesday. I cant recover that quick nowadays sadly.
(never had issue with Strava android app misreporting thus far though)0 -

Do you turn off wi-fi before starting the app? That used to really bugger up my initial readings as I left my drive. Think my top speed was something like 1600 kph until I started disabling wifi!0 -
Yep turned Wi-Fi off, I have a HTC Sensation if that has GPS issues?0

recently went looking for a local cat4 segment with the intention of giving it a go and going back until I got it. road what I could only call a small incline with a roundabout in the middle thinking I had taken a wrong turning but got home to find that was it and I was 4th fastest lol.
Will be going back again soon to get the KOM. Strava has defiantely miscalculated that one0
