Viewing the Olympic RR - Box Hill

I'm hoping to come down to watch the RR on July 28th. Box Hill would be my first choice to watch it and note that tickets for special viewing areas at two points on the course go on sale later this month at about £15 a pop.
For those that know the hill/area is it going to be a seated grandstand at the side of the road or will it be more like the scenes on the climbs in the televised Euro climbs and a free for all once in the ticketed area?

Likely to be a free for all with the exception of a few VIP grand stands that will no doubt be at the best spots blocking views for those that have paid money.

It will be nothing like scenes from European climbs though because AFAIK the riders will be separated from spectators by crash barriers.

Will it be worth £15 ? I doubt it.

Its good to see the locals taking inspiration from our European cousins and daubing supporting messages to riders on the road.

I'll likely go for the tickets at the top of Box Hill as you'll see the race 9 times as well as watch the finish on a big screen. Expect everyone to be inside an enclosure for both security and protection of the local 'wildlife' - those folks in the mobile home parks down the Tadworth Road are pretty menacing.

Any back way in? For the benefit of us tights gits! Used to be good, MTB into the back of Clumber Park, for the RAC Rally!

Big screen was mentioned in this week's comic - for the top enclosure, not the cheaper one at the bottom.

There are plenty of trails up the back of Box Hill, but expect the whole lot will be barriered-off with 'rent a mob' in fluoro jackets preventing people sneaking in.

Spectators at Box Hill will have the choice of two viewing areas (Donkey Green and Dormouse Drive). At Donkey Green you will be able to see the race from three zones, and there will also be a big screen and commentary so you can enjoy the rest of the action. At Dormouse Drive there will be two viewing zones, also with commentary.

I have no knowledge of the area and Google Street View has obviously been denied by the NT. Where are Donkey Green & Dormouse Drive? Which is the better viewing area? Is it worth the hassle?

Donkey Green is the area around the cafe; Dormouse Drive is the road up to the first bend.

I'm assuming that Straw Belle Slope is reserved for the illuminati of the corporate hospitality world.

Donkey Green ticket gets you access to Straw Belle or Donkey Green, but guess you have to be v.early and fight for a space on Straw Belle. Would think the hospitality stuff have their own section.

Back ways in, there are plenty, and front ways, but yeah, the viewing areas will be fenced off. Probably only sneaky way of getting a view is to climb a tree outside those areas.

Picture from the test event on this page - http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/l ... tem718550/

Don't know if it will be as open for the real event.

Also makes a point that the ticketing was nothing to do with the NT and they essentially don't get the money from it other than costs. So 100% pure profiteering from LOCOG.

Hmm, got straight through to the card payment screen. Put in my details and was then told that my purchase of tickets had failed....

Angrier than a bloody angry thing.

Same happened to me. Waited for 3 minutes to check availability. Got told I had succeed, pressed the confirm card button and then told I'd FAILED.

What an utter shambles. Still at least I've saved myself £15 and a £6 postage. Will spend that on beer en route.

    Thanks Seb

    OFFS!

In the queue, but sounds like everyone's is failing. Is the official site the only option or can you do it from Ticketmaster site etc?

I guess there must have been tens of thousands of people trying to get tickets but the system is an utter mess. It makes you think you have tickets and are just waiting for payment approval and then tells you that you have none. FFS.

Yep, farce - reserved my tickets but then couldn't pay for them. Now got a 15 minute wait which isn't going down any time soon. Another ticketing balls up - pathetic (and predictably so).

    Nice.

I got as far as waiting for payment confirmation, and then it helpfully informed me that no tickets had been reserved.

    Excellent!
