Best towns/cities in Britain

We've done the worst, now which ones are the best? I'd put Canterbury at the top of the pile despite the lack of a half-decent football team and the existence of a load of rip-off shops in the city centre. You just can't beat blasting about in the city centre on the narrow cobbled streets before the locals and tourists have woken up.

York, Helmsley or Crayke. All in Yorkshire, naturally.
Can't stand Canterbury; it's full of Kents.0 -

Oakham (Rutland) - the only town i'd actually move back to after leaving0

York or Bristol.0

Bristol is right up there for me. There's a fair few places I'd be more than happy to live, though!0

Only one for me, my beloved Warrington!

York and Chester are the two places I would happily go for a weekend break.
I really like Dartmouth other than the crappy parking. Padstow and Salcombe are both lovely but spoiled by the city slickers who laud it over everyone.
I'm surprised by people saying Bristol, I worked there for 10 years and don't think it's anything special although it's improved a bit since the new shopping centre opened and brought a bit of life back to the city centre. I think Cardiff is a far better city though.0 -
Halstead, Sudbury and Hadleigh for me!Cannondale Trail 6 - crap brakes!
Cannondale CAAD80 -
Why can't people tell the difference between a town and a city? For info, Cardiff, York, Chester, Durham and Canterbury are cities - not towns! To the Dunce corner for those who know who they are!
Anyway, for a start, look at the list here. It isn't exactly a list of the best (Devizes isn't that special for a start) but he makes a good case!

Newport is a city but still got plenty of mentions in the worst town thread (justifiably!).
If we are going for towns and just towns then Dartmouth is my choice.0 -
Although i love where I live part of me still hankers after the town I grew up in, Eastbourne. Yes I know it's full of old people waiting for God but the countryside around is lovely and varied and all my old mates are still around. Other than that it's Limmasol, Cyprus my mums home town(bugger, just realised it's meant to be in UK!)Norfolk, who nicked all the hills?

Fixed for the pedant. :P0 -
Look very, very carefully. And don't focus too much on one part of the page.0

You see I quite like Monmouth. It's pretty unique (I once read it had the most independent shops of anywhere in the UK, dunno if that's still true), great cycling both on road and off + loads of other outdoory pursuits. 20 miles to the nearest motorway too.
There's a load of nice towns running up the Marches - Ross, Hay, Ludlow etc. Haven't lived in any of them and I expect they're sickeningly dull.0 -
I am surprised Edinburgh hasn't had a mention. It's a great place to live, everything on the doorstep just needs to be a couple of degrees hotter.0

D'oh! Got you now. But it was better just as towns. Cities are kind of too easy. Mostly the nice cities are well known for being nice and the duff ones well known for being duff. So you just get arguments from, for example, people living in Liverpool trying to make out it somehow isn't a total dump despite the overwhelming evidence otherwise!Faster than a tent.......0
