He scored near enough exactly the same goal for Arsenal at Leicester the previous August in a 3-3 draw that Leicester really should have won.

Terry barely qualifies as a human being, let alone a footballer

    I didn't know it was a pre-requisite

I won't be the only contributor to this thread who is still waiting for Messi to perform *like Messi* on the international stage. Ronaldo has been standout for Portugal for a good 5-years now, and that's a useful squad to stand out in.

I suppose these polls go one of two ways: we all have differing opinions and respect each other in having those. OR we concentrate on facts and make an objective assessment.

Yes, quite frankly it does. Because just like all the others you'll be incapable of seeing past anyone that hasn't worn the red shirt

Given that both have a hit-rate of 1 in 3 (ish) for their very average international sides that have won nothing it's interesting that anyone feels that there's any kind of comparison at that level. Everywhere else it's not really a comparison, although it's always good to hear the "it's because he plays for Barca" claim.

I have no problem with your opinion, although there's very little doubt that if you want to really concentrate on FACTS and make an objective assessment, there's only one choice. That'll be the one that European and World players and coaches make pretty much every year and will make again this year, regardless of who wins the Euros.

I have no problem with Ronaldo as a player, he's in the next ranks of truly great current players alongside Iniesta and Xavi but I'm afraid Messi is operating a level that is just above everybody else.

Ha, fair enough. You can rest assured that I am not a glory supporter. :)

I agree with a lot of what you say, but I would suggest that the outcome of major competitions DOES colour the opinions of players and coaches voting for the Ballon d'Or.

In that case, as I haven't voted yet, I'll go for any one of a number of Matt Le Tissier goals. The sublime 35 drive past Tim Flowers, the double flick over the defenders head before burying it against Newcastle, well the list goes on, and on, and on.

Good shout. Was actually there for that one too, but didn't appreciate the majesty of it until I saw the highlights on TV. What a player, and an utter gentleman to boot.

Last time I got tickets to an Arsenal match (Emirates cup this year) I was seated so high up I got a nose bleed. Glad I got to see him lift a trophy... (I'm being serious).

Maradona is the best player I have ever seen. Today it is Messi. In his day it was Pele.

Best and Cantona have their places for many moments of brilliance, but Messi just keeps on producing it. He is not the best in some areas, are better headers, faster, but overall he is more than the sum of his parts.

This is one of my favourite goals, Cantona:

Who do you think is the greatest footballer of all time? - Maradona

Who do you think is the best footballer in the World right now? - Messi

Who is your favourite footballer ever? - Gazza

What was the greatest goal you have ever seen? - Maradona's second against England in '86.

Favourite goal ever - Gazza against Scotland @ Euro 96

Messi and Ronaldo are both obscenely good and although they both play for ridiculously talented attacking teams are both genuinely legendary players and will go down as two of the best of all time. At club level. Which brings us onto why players like Maradona, Pele and even (fat) Ronaldo are regarded as the greatest - they consistently delivered on the biggest stage of all over and over again, something Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo haven't quite managed yet. On the plus side they both have at least a couple of world cups left in them and if not England (haha as if) I'd love to see one of these two lift a world cup as they are the best players I've seen week in week out in my lifetime and are both capable of single handedly winning matches on their own (which is why I picked Maradona - regularly destroyed teams both at international and club level despite "old school" tackling in them days).

The Bergkamp goal in 98 was awesome, here's a youtube link that I've just watched to remind myself: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XsZkCFoqSBs

...but surely the greatest ever must be:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g0NT6aUwN8c

Gazza at Euro96 vs. Scotland, dentist's chair celebration and all! Football is no place for balanced analysis, for my generation Gazza was the greatest English and therefore World's greatest footballer of all time.
    So there!

Who do you think is the greatest footballer of all time? I'm minded to say Maradona because, like Cornerblock said, he carried an average Argentina side, and single-handedly beat both England and Belgium in '86. But it's Pele for me.

Who do you think is the best footballer in the World right now? Messi

Who is your favourite footballer ever? Ian Rush God.

What was the greatest goal you have ever seen? Carlos Alberto in the '70 WCF. It's football's equivalent of the Baa Baa's try against NZ.
    FCN 2-4.

The Welsh Best, a man to be admired. Famously flicked the keeper the Vs as he dribbled round him.

Edit: not Welsh at all. I thought he'd played for Swansea for some reason. He gets bonus points though for kicking Mark Lawrenson in the face during a game.
