48km left to go - a five man break (including 41 yo Niko Eeckhout and Greg van Avermaet) caught by a chasing group of about 2 dozen riders. the peleton is about 23 seconds behind. The break is very scrappy. Sky, Lotto and 1T41 were leading the chase - at least until Greipel tried to attack them all on a climb to try to get across to the break (didn't work, though)

42 k. Sky pulling it all back together.
Chavanel in a 7 man break with around 20seconds.

Who do Sky work for here?

Is there any etiquette regarding Sutton being defending champ being allowed a crack at it or if and when it comes down to a sprint just play the trump card of Cav?

Cav. No doubt aout it. If it's going to be a sprint you use your best sprinter.

Not Chav anyway -That break won't stay away - not without riders from any of the big teams

  • Weirdly though Sutton has been sat behind cav in the team sky train for the last 20km. Blocking other teams or just mixing it up so others are not quite sure who they are working for? Used to seeing cav last man in line

pre-race interview Cav said they were hoping for a chance at the bunch sprint for him, but they were confident of having different options for the win if necessary. Maybe Sutton is keeping fresh for an 8km out jump?

I think everyone knows this break is doomed...question is if there'll be another one before Sky set the sprint up?

it's going to the sprint so I'll have to go with Cav despite him not riding the back of the Sky train....

Huta matched him for speed, but beaten by positioning. Looks like I didn't miss much by only watching the last 5km.

    What happened to Renshaw?

Cant say i noticed Renshaw, Rabobank were at the front a maybe 5/6 KM out but nothing like a challenge ever materialised and don't think they had anybody in the top ten or so.

I can't be the only one who doesn't think he's going to be a real challenger in the sprints, can I?

Cant see it at all. Best lead out man in the world= made to look great by the best sprinter in the world.

I just feel so sorry for him- he must have joined Rabo with such high hopes.
I thought he would have been better off staying as the best lead-out man in the peloton, but I can understand why he wanted to try his own chances.

    Watch this space.

He'll be signed by DB next year. And at the press conference, he'll say that he'll be given lots of chances to ride for himself, and then he'll be Cav's lead-out man for every race.

Why sign him if Cavendish doesn't need him?
