I can't help you on this one...
Chris King headset is standard spec on every bike I'll ever own... buy cheap, buy twice....
Anything Shimano is cup and cone and therefore sh*t... Wouldn't touch them with a barge pole...Ibis Mojo HD 2011 www.bikeradar.com/forums/viewtopic.php? ... t=12842777

Chris King headsets ;-) - I have 18 year old cup and cone headsets still working fine.
Stems over £25
Alu bars and seatposts, over about £30.
Hope brakes.

Cant really say I like to cut back anywhere, but headset is usually the only place I cut back when I can, won't spend anymore on pedals than £50 or so, unless I ever move to SPD's and I'd get Xtr trails...
Will never have cup and cone hubs again, or "factory" wheels, gimme a solid set of handbuilts to your spec anyday.0 -
Height dropper seat posts that are over £250, ie rockshox and spesh. No need to cost that much0

Anything XTR or X0.

Braided hoses
Floating rotors on XC bikes.
In fact, floating rotors on pretty much all bikes.
Not so much pointless extravagance as just plain pointless though.
I mean if you REALLY want to stick to things that are a pointless extravagance, almost all mountain bikes fall into that category. They have no REAL purpose. Sure, it's fun, and it can get/keep you fit, but it's hardly an essential item is it.0 -
Carbon stems
This. Totally pointless. Heavier than alu ones while costing far more.
Not sure I'd say much of the stuff in the OP is pointless, I have/had all of those - they all have their place!
Deore hubs weigh a ton, plenty of reason to spend more!
If you're not bothered about weight then I can see more point, the vast majority of the things mentioned I'd say "but they're lighter" :-)
I'd echo CWNT on braided hoses and floating rotors.
Erm... struggling otherwise, I've probably bought all the 'extravagant' things :oops:0 -

Obviously never been to places like the Alps then?.... Floating rotors dissipate heat way better than solid rotors and reduce brake fade... On XC bikes I'd maybe agree but for long technical descents, I'd rather pull the brake lever and have brakes when I need them than pull them and have them come back to the bar...Ibis Mojo HD 2011 www.bikeradar.com/forums/viewtopic.php? ... t=12842777

They are designed not to dissipate heat any better, but prevent warping at extreme temp (especially with thinner rotors). In my experience are more prone to rattling and warping though!
Heat dissipation depends on many factors.0 -
Having used both in multiple Alpine visits, I'd rather have floating rotors than solid ones, the Shimano XT floating rotors are way more consistent than solid rotors.
Never had an issue with rattling and warping either...Ibis Mojo HD 2011 www.bikeradar.com/forums/viewtopic.php? ... t=12842777

Step down off yer soapbox for a minute there fella and wind your neck in. If you read my post again, you'll see I quite clearly said "pretty much all bikes".
I'm well aware of the supposed benefits of floating rotors vs fixed. But as 90% of people who buy them, do so because they are pretty colours and won't ever get to anywhere near the heat where they *could* be of some benefit, I stand by my comment.
The hope floaters that came on my old commie mini-DH were bIoody awful for rattling.0 -

In the true sense of the term 'floating'... I'd agree, I mean the rotors with an alloy spider and steel rotor....
I think although they are not actually floating, they are still referred to as floating...Ibis Mojo HD 2011 www.bikeradar.com/forums/viewtopic.php? ... t=12842777

Nope. Still not floating. Sure they are are made from 3 different metals; 2 types of aluminium and 1 steel, and are similar to floating rotors in so much that there is a spider and a disc, but that is where the similarity ends. Floating rotors suck. Buckets.A Flock of Birds
