    Bump

Its not really my style of music, but I do like Gun's version of Cameo's Word Up (look out for Geordie LaForge in the video).

For the sake of your ears, don't go near Mel B's version.

Now, where did I put my red cod piece?...

It's My Life on Bon Jovi's 'This Left Feels Right' album is better than their original version on the 'Crush' album.

I prefer the versions recorded by Gerry Garcia and David Grisman or the Grateful Dead version on So Many Roads.

  • What are the best examples of a cover version being better than the original?

I'll start, with Johhny Cash - Hurt and Dizzee Rascal - That's Not My Name.

    Who's next?

when i read the topic , i was going to write johnny cash hurt , but you beat me to it . A song that epic, it can make grown men cry ! (-:

American Pie - Madonna: I think Madonna has a lovely voice and I'm sick of people who say that the "original rock version" of any song is great. Don McLean as an ugly hippy freak who happened to have a one hit wonder. Madonna had guts to cover a song like this and her video was a great advert for gay rights. Respect! And her tits were awesome.

Other great covers: The Jam: Heatwave
    Queen: Goin' Back
Dusty Springfield: ne me quitte pas
Dead Kennedys: I fought the law

You are so very very wrong. I do not have the words to express just how wrong you are.

The Stranglers doing Walk on By.
    Lemonheads version of Mrs Robinson.
Another one for Hurt by Mr Cash.
The version of 7 Nation Army currently getting airplay is an abomination, don't know who it's by.

Meat Loaf's cover of 'No Matter What' - far FAR superior to the bland Boyzone original, though admittedly that's not difficult.

Don't think it was a single as such but Richard Thompson's version of 'Hit ME Baby One More Time' is good.

Gomez's (not Selena) take on a Stones classic, taken from their recent NA tour.

Huge Gomez fan notwithstanding, great cover.

I heard Substitute by Clout the other day, deemed it to be worthy of cheesy old classic pop song of my youth status so 79p on iTunes then, and then found out that their version was a cover of what was originally the A side with I Will Survive by Gloria Gaynor on the flip, but the music outlets preferred the B side.

    So. Clout. Substitute.

Sorry but that version is absolute pants. Prefered the version that blended in New Order's Blue Monday.

+1 For Johnny Cash - Hurt

    Glen Campbell - Sing (Travis)

Think its the older voice lends it self to the song. I don't thing a young Mr Cash & Mr Campbell would of sounded so good.
