Cruisin' by D'Angelo is better than the Smokey Robinson original.
I was going to suggest the cover of Maria Muldaur's Midnight At The Oasis by Brand New Heavies, but after listening to the original, I realise that I would have been mistaken. Both versions are good, but Maria Mulaur wins.
FCN 3: Raleigh Record Ace fixie-to be resurrected sometime in the future
FCN 4: Planet X Schmaffenschmack 2- workhorse
FCN 9: B Twin Vitamin - winter commuter/loan bike for trainees
G'n'R are kings of the cover version. I prefer their version of Knockin on Heaven's Door and Live and Let Die but can't decide on whether their version of Sympathy for the Devil is better than the Stones. Tom Jones' version of Kiss (Prince's version has the same effect as nails on a black board!). Prefer the Stereophonics version of Handbags and Gladrags to Rod's but the original Chris Farlowe version is still the best.
+1 on that bad boy right there, as it is FILTHY compared to the original.
+1 JC's version of Hurt

We Will Rock You by Queen is a million times better than We Will Rock You by Queen, provided that the former is the BBC session version that they did for John Peel, October 1977. Awesome. The live version(s?) of it, both of them indeed, are dire.
I've got two copies, one with Alan Freeman in & out-troing it, the other with Tommy Vance agreeing how great it is. Both dead too; shame.
Sensational Alex Harvey Band - Dehlila (Tom Jones)
Gary Jools - Mad World (Tears for Fears)
Alterbridge - Sweet Child O' Mine (Guns and Roses) - Not 100% sure on this being better but a good take on it anyway.
Faith No More - Easy (commodores)
Muse - Feeling Good (best known as sung by Nina Simone)
Also check out Volbeat's cover of the Dusty Springfield song I only Wanna be With You.

Because it's not better than Dolly Parton's original...?
Sam Cooke did a great job, but I prefer the instrumentation and vocal on the Otis Redding cover.

+ 1 for JC's version of Hurt. (it certainly has the edge over the Leona Lewis abomination) Another Cash one I really like is Personal Jesus.
