What are the best examples of a cover version being better than the original?

I'll start, with Johhny Cash - Hurt and Dizzee Rascal - That's Not My Name.

Who's next?

They're aren't many, but Hendrix - All Along The Watchtower and Sinead O'Connor - Nothing Compares 2 U are the obvious ones IMO.

  • Well, I was going to suggest 'I'd rather go blind' by the Chicken Shack, featuring vocals by Christine Perfect (later to become Christine McVie of Fleetwood Mac) it is a simple blues and soul masterpiece. However I've just re-listened to the original Etta James version and now I'm not sure. Listen to them both and tell me which is best.

Sort of... The shatner version is very good in its own very weird way... The one you'd actually want to come on the radio often isn't his!

-1 'Nah'. Too sweet sounding, got no balls to it. Guy doesn't sound like he's suffered.
