Contador Ruling

  • As a side issue, I wonder if Diet meds add up to being Performance enhancers, truly, less weight will generally help a cyclists peformance.

Look at football and the way, I believe Toure was busted for a diet pill and said it was his wife's. This Brazilian Adriano is in the news about putting on the weight and his team chaining him in his hotel room to not eat! Pretty radical.
    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/footba ... eight.html

Many of us if not most battle the bulge and exercise can send appetites through the roof.

Marca has about 3 articles on AC today about all of this.

The Butcher of Irun, NOT to be confused with the Barber of Seville, says he believes AC was looking for a "coartada" in his beef. What is a "coartada" which sounds so much like the English word "cut"? Doesn't have to do with that word, "Coartada" apparently means ALIBI. Story: http://www.marca.com/2012/02/10/ciclism ... 78665.html
New word for me. So to repeat, Zabaleta, the butcher says AC is just looking for an alibi in his meat. Zabaleta says he's satisfied and "peaceful", tranquil with the CAS ruling, great friends AC? Huh?

http://www.marca.com/2012/02/10/ciclism ... 87293.html Here Alberto says "Sacrifice is OUR secret". Okay, FF covered this one.

This quote: "Canal Plus Francia, donde la imagen de Contador, Nadal y Gasol se asociaba al dopaje." Related to the below story, it seems the French TV channel Canal Plus is making fun of Contador, tennis player Nadal and basketball player Gasol and showed their image and associated it with doping.

http://www.marca.com/2012/02/10/tenis/1328863874.html More on the channel in neighbouring France doing a parody, satire on some of the Spanish athletes after the Contador ruling came out.

"Las burlas a Nadal, Pau Gasol, Iker Casillas y el propio Contador, que aún continuaron un episodio más en la tarde de este jueves -poniendo una desafortunada letra relacionada con el dopaje sanguíneo al himno español- han transcendido el ámbito del deporte para llegar a la máxima instancia." "The jokes were of Nadal, Paul Gasol (basketballer, LA Lakers), Iker Casillas, Spain goalkeeper and Contador, saying something like they made fun of these guys while playing the Spanish National Anthem.

Also says this "desde Canal + Francia ha martilleado a los principales iconos del deporte español actual desde el pasado lunes, cuando se conoció la sentencia del TAS en el caso Contador, y que no ha despertado sonrisa alguna en nuestro país." Since Canal Plus of France has Hammered principal Spanish Sports icons since last Monday when the CAS sentence on Contador became known and it has not left OUR (nuestro) country smiling. They continued the attacks on Tuesday too the article says.

Odd stuff here. Gasol the basketball player?? Never though of him and doping but they also mention Nadal. Perhaps there are suspicions of him. But this is outside of the cycling world for the most part.

Well, we have some people from France on this board, maybe someone saw this.

More to read later, guess you had to be there.

Nadal was named by a French newspaper in connection with Puerto. He threatened to sue but never did.

CAS also confirmed that they hadn't allowed WADA to present a witness with "severe" allegations dating from 05-06.

Interesting stuff, and all on the record.

There was some more stuff about that I read from the news wires that wasn't in the report.

    C+P from Reuters:
REUTERS - Sources within CAS have claimed that Alberto Contador's lawyers called their own protected witness during the Spanish cyclist's recent doping hearing. The man, of indeterminate age and identified only as Witness F, testified that Contador was "True Champion" and a "Heavyweight". He added that prosecution witness Michael Ashenden was "ignorant and a lightweight" and that WADA's David Howman did not have a high enough post count to be taken seriously. Under cross examination by the prosecution, Witness F stated that he "had told them not to respond and he wasn't listening to anything they said". Over seven thousand photos of Contador owned by Witness F were deemed inadmissable due to gross copyright infringement

Its disgusting how Contador's lawyers weren't allowed to bring this witness testimony to the table fairly by the prosecution, it just shows how low these people will stoop, they do not show the qualities of decent human beings.

    Speaker:
A.C. receives more and more support. In his hometown a march has been organized and apparently there will even be made a videoclip by some sportsmen.

There are 15L of blood stored in my fridge

    Speaker:
They've got an incredible energy to defend Contador, i wonder where it comes from.

The other one is about donating blood, that can make you win the tour. (Sorry, my player did not work with this one, so i missed the end.)

Is that poor professor still on hunger strike in Spain?

He's bound to be as thin as Berto by now.
  • The French channel posted satire, parody, so did Rich in his Reuters article, I think both are for the most part just fun and humour. I wouldn't look any further into it than that. You do have to wonder some about Spain's recent sporting successes but nothing unseemly in doing so. Just in my opinion.
  • Coming out of the woodwork here, but the idea of FF being some young, up and coming Patrick Bateman type investment banker, coming home to his yuppie apartment covered in contador posters is cracking me up.

And that makes me think of the movie "Breaking Away", that movie is loosely based on a young man who in fact, came from what was Czechoslovakia, moved to America and in college, he had a bit of an obsession with the Italian riders, the culture and all that, the main character in the movie rode a Masi, listened to opera and new a smidgeon of Italian. He became disillusioned when a real Italian team, in the movie called Cinzano of course, I think that's a water or something and the team let him down by their behaviour.

So most people here have probably seen that movie but if they haven't, it's kind of fun.

OT - Cinzano is one of those Martini type drinks. I had rather too many Vodka Martini's at a "party" when I was 17 and have never been able to drink it since! I threw up the next day, backstage at Euro Disney, next to a pluto head...

(On a side note isnt a Vodka Martini (like mr bond likes to knock back) actually 'Vodka, Gin and Vermouth' ...and the brand Martini is the Vermouth bit in the equation.... where as a real Martini is actually Gin and Vermouth? I dunno though... all gets confusing!!)

Interesting photo but on the other hand, it really shows you this with Contador is a big deal with at least a lot of Spaniards meaning in turn cycling is a big deal, I don't know if that would be the vast majority but a good number all the same. Perhaps Italy is a bit that way too.

But Jeremy Whittle in the book "Bad Blood" highlighted that perhaps this obsession is why you might see some cyclists doping in these countries, Contador, Basso, others have been king until something like a positive test happens.
