    It's beyond PB power ;) 28W more than my best 25 mile TT power last year. Been doing all my training in the TT position and lots of training on the turbo, resisting the urge to do group rides. I feel the turbo training is much more effective for me than outdoors, I seem to benefit a lot from the totally continuous nature of it. Made solid gradual gains over the whole winter period, really.

    I'm not nearly as fit as last year but thought I'd have a go.... conditions must be good as this is only a minute or so off my PB. Keen to finally get under 50 min this year.

    @Steve Thought it was ~PB but didn't want to seem like a stalker. It's really inspiring to see gains year on year from someone who already trained hard. Totally agree that threshold and VO2 training intervals are all about uninterrupted quality. If only I liked the turbo a bit more!

    Hey Tarmac Expert, less groups rides and more Turbo huh? Very impressive. Can I ask how often you're riding the turbo and what kinda sessions? Are we talking more threshold efforts (e.g. the classic 2 x 20's). I'm looking to break my 3 lap record this year so any 'training guidance' would be appreciated. Cheers :D

    I train every day, the only thing I manipulate is intensity and duration for each session. I hate complicated sessions, so each session has just one purpose, I can't stand all this do this then do that then do x, y, z stuff.

    E.g. today I just got on the turbo and rode at 227W for 1hr 50 mins in the TT position while watching a movie. Why 227W? Just because it's supposed to be a day that combines some training benefit with some recovery, and I've found that's the right sort of power to achieve that.

    Other days I'll do a threshold effort - yesterday's 3 laps was that, or I'll do a straight 50 mins on the turbo, which might be max effort, or it might be a bit less, depending on how I feel. I tend to do 50 mins rather than 2 x 20 so it's more specific training for a 25 mile TT.

    Other days a VO2max interval session on the turbo. I often pad this out at the end with some steady zone 2/3 afterwards, same for the threshold days.

    I mix all those up in whatever ratio I can cope with. If I could handle it I'd do either threshold or VO2max every day. So the idea is to insert just enough easier days to be able to cope with the regime as a whole.

    I'm typically aiming to achieve a target TSS each day, I use the Edge 800 to know when I've hit my target. I use WKO+'s performance management chart to control the rate at which I ramp up my CTL. Slow and steady gains work best for me, if I start trying to do lots of days with a TSS a lot bigger than my CTL it quickly crushes me.

    It sounds like you're racking up quite a few turbos sessions (4/5?) each week. Nearly 2 hours on the turbo is impressive even if it is significantly below your threshold :shock: ...Because of injury I stopped riding back in September 2011 and didn't get going to mid January but was mildly impressed to see I could jump in with fast groups circulating Regents Park after 8-10 (2 x 20) sessions. I was about to put the old Kurt Kinetic in the cellar but having read your post I think I'll keep those threshold sessions going for while. At Regents Park now you can pretty much hook up with 2-5 guys taking turns at 22-26mph almost everyday of the week. Its fun, time flies by, it feels hardish because of the anaerobic jumps and you feel good. However, I'm now starting to question how much training benefit that really provides for 'time-crunched' folks like myself that have a significant training history. Hmmm, thanks again, mate :D

    Woo! Finally broke the 60min barrier on a timed ride. Did it during peak hour too with a slipping saddle so I reckon i can get below 59. Does help when you can sit on 35kph along Sawyers Hill with that easterly.

    Nice run this morning - first time in ages I've been into the park. 4 mins up on January time - so hopefully something is working for training. Still 5 and a half minutes off what I was doing a couple of years ago - different bike and different goals, but still.

    3 Laps prior to breakfast, cold hard and 1 lap slowed by traffic on downhill - still quite pleased with that given I was in the park before 7am.

    10 months after the baby came along, I'm finally getting back to normal. Been plugging away all this time but seemed to hit a "watts ceiling" that I've only recently been able to improve. Nice to see them going in the right direction again!

    Question for the faster guys...

    On the drag between Roehampton gate and Richmond gate, how do you ride the drag? I often see that my speed up the steep part (at its lowest) is about 11-12 mph (average conditions) wheres when looking at the faster guys speeds, they are more around 13-14mph (at their lowest). Do you big ring it all the way and get out the saddle, or do you stay aero?

    (some time ago since I was a fast guy on the 3LC but I retired from doing them after my 50:01...) but I stay aero the whole time, small ring possibly, on the edge with a decent east wind so may still be in large, whatever gear is appropriate really, I certainly don't lift my power to outrageous amounts to get up or get out of the saddle.

    (I may not be draped over the bar in a 3LC as the park tends to be busier, but I'd still be as aero as my silly body shape allows)

    However, if you look at all the other photos, just about everyone else gets out the saddle. I would say what works for you is right, and it's unlikely that your decision at the time is that far from wrong.

    The fastest guy is a TTer so is super Aero I guess! big ring the whole way round - Sawyers'll be largely out of the saddle, as will all the climbs in fact.

    Not one of the faster "guys" though I've done a sub-55 at my best...

    But it depends what kind of fitness you have. If you're predominantly a one-speed TTer type, then staying low and aero and in the saddle and spinning -- and most importantly, keeping going like that over the top and not having to "rest" is the way to go. If you're a crit or road racer and are used to short bursts of effort to get up hills and quick "recoveries" in between, then out of the saddle and going fairly hard is probably best for you.

    I've been both, I've done both. Try it and see what works for you, and it may change over time depending on what kind of training and riding you're doing.

    Yes, big ring all the way, and it was with an 11-23 cassette, so the shortest gear that I used was 53x23. I get out of the saddle for the steepest bit of Sawyers, for the first bit of the climb after the roundabout at Richmond Gate, and for the two steepest parts of the climb from Kingston Gate. Those are basically the only points my speed drops below 20mph.

    Cold day today. E/SE light wind. Pissed off with power drop off - too over zealous on Dark Hill at the end of the first lap. On the upide, 5w and 3 minutes quicker than last month.

    First try at this in the year. Cold and only a little windy, but held up by traffic on all three laps :/ I'd like to say I'd be maybe a minute faster without the traffic but who knows if that's true! Hoping to bust 60 mins this year.

    My first attempt of the year weekend before last. Was windy and quite cold, and not really on it.
    Much better legs following day doing a lap in about 16 mins (actually ~16 mins for 10.7k and then ~40 secs for 100m in traffic...) but can't really do RP3LCs on Sunday afternoons so did some hill reps instead. Impressed with TarmacExpert's 48 in March. Going to have to up my game (or borrow a TT bike).
