Because, as the zombies were attracted by the gunshot. They were just walking by until that.

About the gas, because they already had been there previously, when Sophia went missing so they must of already gotten the fuel then.

Alternatively if you're all grown up and not in to picture books read The Walking Dead: Rise of the Governor - Its the back story. It doesn’t ruin the story in anyway but you'll be much more informed when the next TV series starts

But also because they were following a helicopter which passed overhead. What I want to know is, why didn't our protagonists hear the helicopter and follow it as well??

I always thought it the series seemed quite down-to-earth but this new chicks arrival has thrown it right into comic book territory! And was that 'salvation' in the background at the end of the episode? No wait... don't tell me anything... damn Autumn is going to be a long time in coming.
