Rowing - Any help??

Oh no, there is definitely cross over. It's just that obviously specificity is best for a particular sport. As I alluded to previously, though, I'm a big fan of cross-training for non-elite athletes. I'm much more interested in all round fitness, and for this the marginal benefit of a first erg session over a 5th cycling session is pretty self-evident. Of course, if your aim is to be a better cyclist, you'll almost certainly be better off with a 5th cycling session. Horses for courses, as they say.
6:50 is a very respectable time for a casual rower, as is 1:39 for a half marathon. My PBs aren't much better than those at 15 years younger!Bike lover and part-time cyclist.0 -
ERGING IS HORRIBLE. DON'T DO IT.
(500m record 1:27, 2k record about 6:20, oh yeeeah)0 -
@AidanR: I fully agree with you. The problem that I find is that having a few goals on the go at the same time helps break things down nicely and stop any boredom. I also ride MTB so a little bit more upper body doesn't go amiss. Also very much more interested in all round fitness, as also enjoy the duathlon's (and maybe a tri if I can learn to swim properly by next year)
@Lycraholic: You really enjoy suffering by the look of your ergo times
Doing the C2 Challenge again this year and already up 7 secs on my 1 mile row from last year (5:30 vs 5:23), so should be up for a 6:45 2k this year hopefully (but really would like to crack 6:40). 6:20 is way out of my reach in this lifetime!
I am only 4 secs off your 500m time... but as you know - that's feels further away than the 2k time.Simon0 -
2K in 6'49" was my best.....you know, one of those days where it just felt so 'right'? I was 43 (last year) and had struggled to get below 7 mins for about a month, then did two in a week! That was after 6 months doing a million metres for charity, then deciding to follow a training program which really made a difference. I had been doing between 5k and 10k rows prior to training for the 2k distance and for aerobic capacity and all round strength (as opposed to muscle) I think it was probably the best exercise I had ever done....and I was an Army PTI for 11 years in my 'yuff'. 10k time was something like 37 minutes.
I then swapped to cycling as I was spending too much time in the gym on an erg when the sun was shining outside and it took very little adaptation. I was doing 50 miles plus in a matter of weeks and averaging 15mph in hilly terrain, 20 on the flat. So I can see how beneficial my base level fitness was to cycling. If you aren't a competitive cyclist I cannot see the problem with involving ego work in your weekly routine. As others have said it certainly helps motivation if you are getting bored with the turbo....

To be fair I am probably quite a lot younger than most posters on here! I don't think I could do times like that now, I haven't touched an erg in months. Still use them for the occasional bit of strength building/core work though.0
