Only recently been following the blog and on Twitter, but seems to always be on the money.

Strikes me as a pro or ex-pro 'cos they seem to know how things work and have a lot of contacts...anyone know who Inner Ring actually is?!

If you're reading this, keep up the good work :)

His name is Matt, but that's all I know. And I might be wrong about that.

    Thanks Ian
  • Duly added. Nice one.

The name does suggest an ex-rider and/or current backroom team member.

I agree. Certainly the best commentator I've read.

Also, his responses to comments are usually humble and friendly - there's no rampant ego at work.
  • Yes it's a really well written,with some excellent insight !

Another +1 and he's often way ahead of the game too.

Are half the articles about Colombia?
No? Then it's not Matt Rendell

I suspect it's someone who's not a native English speaker, or at least not a professional writer.

His writing is excellent, but there are quite a few poorly formed sentences that creep into the articles.
  • He writes more like a very well connected cycling fan than an actual rider.
He's pretty much always on the money and a good read

Absolutely agree - always interesting analysis, informed and balanced perspective, and what always strikes me is how concise he is: many of his articles are very short (compared to, say, Cyclingnews) but contain lots of 'meat'.

He's almost definately not a pro rider (he live tweets pretty much every race, although so did Peter Sagan during the tour  ) but he has made reference to working for a team before, I think it was the old Omega Pharma Lotto lot. He definiately rides for fun though, and is male (or a big burd).

From his writing I would say he's a swanny or back office team. Doubt he's a mechanic.

  • A bit left-field...but...Matt Stephens? He writes pretty well
  • Would love an Inner Ring unmasking.

not if it impacted on his ability to blog

Absolutely agree - he gets so much inside track because of his anonymity

I image it would be completely underwhelming. He won't be famous. He'll be someone like a sales rep for Oakley or a film editor for French TV.

  • Inner Ring is the best cycling writer out there right now. Who cares what his (or her) real name is? When you found out, would it be any more meaningful than "Inner Ring".

I absolutely agree it would probably be underwhelming - but surely not to that extent? Would a sales rep for Oakley really get that kind of inside gossip? If it is something along those lines he would probably lose his job if he got found out considering the amount of time he spends tweeting and blogging...

I don't think he works in cycling, but he's helped out a bit.

I used to think he was Kleber.
