Here's my latest frankensteins 29er build.
Ally front triangle Carbon rear, the forks (at the moment) are Marathon SL's with the weirdest ETA function. loads of standover for a 19" frame
here it is fully built, just waiting for the seatpost.
The Shock is a Rock Shox Ario 2.1 and from what i can tell so far is it will last this weekend before being swapped over to a proper one.
The forks are going to be replaced in the very near future too, then when i sell the hardtail frame and forks i'll buy some new wheels and brakes.
Weights =
frame 2.3Kg
forks 1.9kg
Total build 13.1kg
so with a bit of tinkering i should be able to get that right down! My Carbon Genius was just over 12 so i'm well happy with this as a starting point!

Nice dog.
Bike looks pretty tidy too, although I'm not too sure about the red bits if I'm honest.0 -
The red bits are the carry over bits from the hardtail
Ordering some newbits later0 -

Hi Vee Dub
Where are you getting the powdercoating done please ?
Are they doing a "proper" low temp job ? I have been advised NOT to get an aluminium frame powdercoated due to *some* places using too high of a temperature to bake the frame , resulting in it altering the aluminium hardening process and weakening the frame .
Hence getting quotes for between double and triple what you've been quoted for yours .
TIA

GandG powder coaters, that sounds a bit like Tosh to me, the ovens are hot but nowhere hot enough to alter aluminium carector
I maybe wrong ?0 -

Aluminium low melting temperature (around 660 degrees C) So it depends on how hot these oven are. Really don't know but i doubt they need to get it that high to bake paint...0 -

Altercations in the alloy's intermolecular bonds will occur at a significantly lower temperature than 660C which will make the alloy weaker; since powder coating doesn't really exceed 200C the little weakness that could happen is negligible in this case. I presume the frames out of warranty is it not? So there's no reason not to go ahead and get it done.0 -

Sorry if I've stirred something up here but I was told to watch out for this by the frame refurbishers / repairers that have a similar name to the well known high street catalogue chain !
Propaganda ? Hmmmnnnn . . . could be to "persuade" me to do business with them as "they know what they're talking about"
Will try to look up G and G . Sounds like a good price .
Unless someone can recomend a good reasonably priced resprayer in the Rotherham / South Yorkshire area ?0 -
@VeeDub
Just phoned a local powdercoaters (didn't know we'd got one so close - less than 2 mile away ;-) ) and asked about temps and time in the oven .
180 degrees C for 10-15 mins ! ! !
I do NOT think this is going to affect the ali in the frame really now is it ?
I think my back was gettin well and truely peed up by A!"£$ to spend £200 plus
The quote I've just had for powdercoating in a single colour is £30 + VAT = £36
Stripping the old paint off £10-12 (subcontracted out)
Less than a week turnaround .
They might just be getting my business
Anyway BOT
Think it's gonna look great when it's finished VeeDub . I'm currently trying to get the funds together for a 29er but can't decide between FS , rigid or HT . . .
What do you prefer0 -
fattrucker
I was about to come in with the average cure temp and time is 200C for 10 mins."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Been riding 29er now for over a year, definately the way forward (for me anyway) I thought my HT was great but I prefer the ride of a FS but there's a definate difference in acceleration between the two, and people who say 29ers are slow in acceleration and in the corners haven't ridden mine0 -
can you tell what i've been doing?
and finally, i wanted to ride tonight so put it back together.
One bit i cant strip is the painted carbon seat stay, not with confidence anyway?
any ideas?0 -
New stem and cable fitted, now need to crop the steerer tube a tad.
