Having read that GB won the Bec Hill hill climb last year aged 15 beating some top top names I got a bit excited about this prospect. In my eyes he's the Next Big Thing in pro cycling.
Nice to see he has set his stall out, he just wants to win all 3 grand tours, some classics and the worlds :o

There is an article about him in the new issue of Rouleur that's a good read.

Short Interview in the Telegraph here-

Any more British prospects out there like him? I just hope he sticks at it, doesn't get pushed too hard too soon and WINS!

    Sounds great.

As ever with mid-pubescent youth - there's always a caveat - have they just developed early?

Yeah, I hope he still has lots of developing to do!

You're not the only one to have noticed him:

But let's not hype him up too much.

I first noticed him in June 2010 when I raced against him. (OK, we were in the same Sportif and he was four hours faster than me).

You're right, I just got a bit excited last year and reading more about him fuelled that. Over-Hype is always a problem with precocious talent and I'm guilty of it.

He reminds me of a young lad (15/16?) (think he posts on here actually so won't mention names) who I saw come a close second to an Elite rider at a track event in 2009.

He won the same event in 2010 and is just phenomenal to watch racing.

No way of knowing how they will progress (will birds'n'cars'n'booze intervene when they get a bit older etc?) but it's safe to say they have the natural talent to excel at any aerobic sport.
  • His dad is a former pro track rider I believe, so he's got a mentor close to hand.

IIRC in 2009 he somehow managed to fall off during the Bec Hill climb (wheel spin perhaps?) so he went away, came back the next year and won it.

Was there im 2009. The guy is definitely great.

There are a couple of super young riders from the Cycling Club Hackney.

Dunwich Dynamo in 08 I think these two riders came past me - think they said they were 14 or 15, riding by themselves the whole distance and they were hauling.

Remember the Comic article on him and his dad- hopefully he'll achieve his dreams. Love his attitude- with that alone he should go far.

He was second in my club's urban hill climb last year, which was a quality ride against very decent opposition (he beat Dave Clarke into third).

I hope he does well, but let's not place too much pressure on him. He should do what he enjoys doing, and if that's not cycling then so be it.

    The kid's a don.

We saw him doing the time trial up the alpe the day after the marmotte (Sunday). Think he came 11th against some quality european riders and then he tore up the 3/4 crystal palace race in the Tuesday.

Seriously he has more cycling talent in his little toe than I have in my whole body.

After his bec hill climb win Maurice tweeted a picture of him doing his homework at 2 in the morning.

Seems like a nice kid as well - Maurice is the owner of my LBS (De Ver - great place) & I see him & Germaine out riding most weekends

Not sure that's actually his dad in the picture. He was somewhere behind the camera I think.

There was a funny moment, some time after, as it became apparent that he was going to place highly and maybe even win the event. The MC (who also commentates on the Premier Calendar races) made the mistake of describing the lad as a Junior rider. Mr Burton stepped over and, standing uncomfortably close, looked him straight in the eye and informed him that "he's a Youth rider, not a junior". And then a second time, to make sure it got through. May even have been broadcast over the PA.

Roger, saw the De Ver kit and assumed, still, love the pic heh heh!
  • With permission from the commisaire at Crystal Palace, he was allowed to race with the E-1-2s yesterday. He won.
  • to be fair symon lewis was second... but still a good result for a u16 i suppose, but the hilll climb was much more impressive!

Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn. Wish I had stopped by to watch - was passing at 6.45, just a little too early to hang around.

Did he get away by himself?

Edit, just checked; gapped them on final ascent:

I believe so, he attacked in the final lap and held the gap to the end.

  • he has had much better E12 results at hog hill etc with some top domestic teams, no offence intended for symon who is a very good track rider who beat geraint in national points champs at u16 level himself!

Any idea how Germaine has done since spring 2011?

I saw he won the Bec Hill climb again last year, but what's he doing otherwise?

I was thinking about this a few weeks' back - haven't heard much of him recently. I see he finished 36th in the Junior World Champs, helping Jonathan Dibben to 5th, and there was this in the Telegraph just before the World Champs: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/others ... 1970s.html
